Monmouth Football In 2023: What To Know About The Hawks
The Monmouth football team returns to action in 2023 as a member of the CAA. Here’s what to know about the program.
Monmouth was one of the new kids on the block last season in the CAA, and they will look to build on a mediocre debut in the coming 2023 season.
The Hawks turned in a 5-6 overall record last year, going 3-5 in CAA play.
Among Monmouth’s losses in 2022 was a history-making thriller, in which the Hawks fell to Rhode Island in a contest that featured seven overtimes.
It was the longest game ever played between two FCS programs and the longest contest in CAA Football history. The score was tied at 35 at the end of regulation, and Rhode Island took the win, 48-46.

*In 2021, Illinois and Penn State (a Division I FBS contest) became the first game in FBS history to go to nine overtime periods. Illinois scored a two-point conversion to win 20-18.
Kevin Callahan is the only head coach Monmouth football has ever had, and he’ll be at the helm in 2023 to help the Hawks fly high once again.
CAA Football returns eight programs that finished with winning records in 2022. That includes William & Mary, who went 11-2 overall and tied with New Hampshire atop of the CAA standings with a 7-1 record.

Here’s What To Know About Monmouth Football:
What Year Did Monmouth Football Start Playing?
Monmouth is one of the younger teams in the CAA, having added football in 1993.
Since its inception, the team has compiled a 178-135 record, including an 86-62 mark at home.
When Did Monmouth Join Division I College Football?
The Hawks made their debut in 1993 and jumped right into NCAA Division I-AA football as an independent team. They were 2-5 that year.
Now, they’re classified as NCAA Division I FCS.
How Many Times Has Monmouth Football Made It To The FCS Playoffs?
Monmouth has made three appearances in the FCS Playoffs–2017, 2019 and 2020-2021.
The Hawks’ playoff record is 1-3, which includes a first-round win over Holy Cross in 2019.
When Did Monmouth Football Join The CAA?
Monmouth was a CAA newcomer for the 2022 season.
It came as a unifying move for Monmouth athletics, as most sports had spent the previous nine seasons in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while the football team had been playing in the Big South.
Though there is a formal separation between the main CAA and CAA Football, the move to the CAA allowed all Monmouth sports (except bowling), to compete under the CAA umbrella.
Has Monmouth Football Ever Won The CAA title?
No.
Monmouth’s CAA debut in 2022 did not end with a CAA title. The Hawks were 3-5 in conference play and 5-6 overall.
The Hawks have hoisted trophies in the past, however. They won the Northeast Conference title in 1996, 1998, 2003, 2004 and 2006, and added Big South championships in 2019 and 2020-2021.
Who Is The Monmouth Football Head Coach?
The Monmouth football program has only had one head coach—Kevin Callahan.
He has been solely responsible for developing the culture and tradition for the Hawks and has navigated the team through all 30 of its seasons so far.
Callahan’s 178 wins ranks third among active FCS coaches, and he is one of two FCS coaches with more than 175 wins at the same school.
His continued success earned him AFCA Region II Coach of the Year honors in 2019, and he twice has been a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, given to the top FCS coach each year.
Callahan’s first special recognition came in 1998, when he was named the NEC Coach of the Year, after leading Monmouth to its second NEC title.
Prior to arriving at Monmouth, Callahan spent eight seasons coaching at Colgate University. That came after a stint at Wagner College. He also spent 1980 as an assistant at Syracuse.
Callahan’s coaching debut came in the late 1970s as a graduate assistant at UAlbany, which followed a two-year playing career at the University of Rochester.
Callahan has helped 16 former Hawks reach the NFL.
Who Is Monmouth Football’s Biggest Rival?
Monmouth is one of the smaller schools in the CAA, and its stadium is the smallest in the league, too.
Monmouth also has a relatively short history, compared to some of the other CAA teams that have been in action since the 1890s.
The point? There simply hasn’t been enough time to establish the types of rivalries the CAA is used to following.
Monmouth and Wagner have met 25 times, with the Hawks owning a 15-10 advantage. Monmouth and Robert Morris have played 21 times. The Hawks have played Sacred Heart 19 times.
Perhaps a second year in the CAA and seeing some teams again will help spark new and exciting rivalries for the Hawks.
Where Is Monmouth University?
Monmouth University is in West Long Branch, New Jersey, along the state’s northern coastline.
Founded in 1933, the school has grown from Monmouth Junior College to Monmouth College to Monmouth University. It initially was a two-year institution in a tough economic time, available for local students who wanted to pursue education but perhaps did not have the means to commute or move elsewhere.
In 1956, Monmouth was accredited to offer four-year programs. It was granted university status in 1995.
Notable Monmouth Alums
The list includes the Dallas Cowboys' Miles Austin, the New England Patriots' Chris Hogan, New Jersey governor Chris Christie (honorary doctorate), and soccer player Christie Pearce.
