Highlights: Tuskegee Vs. Hampton

Hampton Football picked up just one conference win in 2022 and finished at the bottom of the CAA standings, tied with Stony Brook at 1-7.

The Pirates were red-hot to start the season, picking up rivalry wins over Howard and Norfolk State, with a victory against Tuskegee coming in between.

It was downhill from there for Hampton, which defeated UAlbany in overtime for its final win of the season, before ending the year with a five-game skid and 4-7 overall record.

Here’s What To Know About Hampton Football:

What Year Did Hampton Start Playing Football?

Hampton played its first football game in 1902. The Pirates played one game that year, topping Armstrong Manual Training, 16-0.

Hampton played just one game in each of its first four seasons, before expanding the schedule to five games in 1906.

When Did Hampton Join Division I College Football?

Hampton graduated to a Division I college football program in 1995, after more than two decades in NCAA Division II. The university is now a Division I FCS program.

How Many Times Has Hampton Football Made It To The FCS Playoffs?

The Pirates have been to the FCS Playoffs five times (1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006) but have not been able to pick up a playoff win.

In Division II competition, Hampton made the playoffs three times and compiled a 1-3 record. The lone victory was against Albany State (Georgia) in the first round of the 1993 postseason.

Has Hampton Football Ever Won a Conference Or National Title?

The Pirates have spent about a dozen years of their history as an independent team. The rest of the years saw them play across four conferences.

They’ve picked up 19 conference titles over the years – 14 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and five in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The first was in the CIAA in 1913, and the most recent was in the Mid-Eastern in 2006.

Hampton also claimed seven Black College National Championships – 1922, 1985, 1994, 1997, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

When Did Hampton Football Join The CAA?

Hampton became a member of the CAA in 2022 after four seasons in the Big South Conference.

Since the CAA included more teams geographically close to Hampton, it meant less time traveling and more time on campus and in the classroom for the players.

Hampton’s only conference win in its debut season was a 38-37 overtime road win over UAlbany in October.

Did Hampton Win The CAA Title In Its First Year?

No.

Hampton finished tied for last place in the conference with Stony Brook (1-7).

Who Is The Hampton Football Coach?

Robert Prunty is entering his fifth season as the head coach at Hampton. He made his debut in 2018 and led the Pirates to a 7-3 mark. The team did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prunty is 21-23 overall at Hampton.

Prior to arriving at Hampton, Prunty spent 2017 as an associate head coach at East Carolina University, where he also coached the defense. That came after serving in multiple roles during a seven-year stint at the University of Cincinnati, two seasons coaching at Texas Tech and getting his start at the high school level.

As a collegiate player, Prunty spent time at Hampton and Alabama A&M.

Who Is Hampton Football’s Biggest Rival?

Hampton and Howard University have a special rivalry that began in 1908. They’ve played 97 times, with Hampton leading the series 55-41-1.

Their first meeting resulted in a 6-0 Hampton victory. Their most recent tangle, in 2022, went to Hampton, 31-28.

There’s a little more on the line in the rivalry between these two HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) – it also is used to determine “The Real HU” for the year ahead. It’s fun, it’s historic, it’s tradition.

Hampton and Norfolk State also have a deep and spirited history that includes 57 meetings since 1963 in what has been dubbed the “Battle of the Bay” for their locations on opposite sides of Virginia’s James River, which empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

Norfolk State leads the series 29-27-1, though Hampton won their 2022 meeting, 17-7.

In 2023, Hampton will host Norfolk State on Sept. 9 and face Howard in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 16.

Where Is Hampton University?

Hampton University is in Hampton, Virginia, about 180 miles from the U.S. Capitol.

The storied history of Hampton University began in 1861, when Mary Peake held a class for 20 students. It took place underneath an oak tree that later was called the Emancipation Oak. It was the site of the first southern reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and still stands on the Hampton campus.

The school grew and transitioned over the decades that followed, first as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in 1868. It became Hampton Institute in 1930. The continued addition of departments and programs led to it becoming Hampton University in 1984.

Notable Hampton Alums

Booker T. Washington, an educator, author, speaker and civil rights advocate, has been regarded as the school’s most distinguished graduate.

Other alums include Alberta Williams King (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s mother), Wanda Sykes (Emmy Award-winning comedian), Robin R. Sanders (U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria), Angela Burt-Murray (deputy editor of Glamour Magazine) and Vanessa Gilmore (youngest appointed federal court judge).

Nearly two dozen former Hampton players have been drafted into the NFL.
