Saginaw Valley State football is looking to build off of an impressive 2022 campaign that saw the team go 8-3. 

The Cardinals barely missed the playoffs a year ago but are hopeful to finally make the leap this year under the leadership of head coach Ryan Brady. 

Brady has done a great job with the program since being hired in 2019 from Ferris State, where he was the co-defensive coordinator. 

With Brady at the helm, Saginaw Valley State has improved its record each season, going from five wins in 2019, to seven wins in 2021 to eight wins in 2022.

Saginaw Valley State will have a quarterback battle this offseason following the graduation of Andrew Brito.

Quarterback Jairus Grissom is the most experienced quarterback, getting a fair amount of reps last season, where he also played wide receiver. Grissom is a mobile quarterback who rushed for 342 yards last year and threw for 229. 

The other quarterbacks in the competition are backups Willie Taylor and Mike O’Horo.

Grissom is a proven leader on the team, which was made evident when he came to the GLIAC Media Day, along with Brady, to represent the program and answer questions.  

Saginaw Valley State Football Faces 5 Teams from The 2022 NCAA Division II Playoffs

Saginaw Valley State has a tough schedule in 2023. 

The Cardinals will open the season against Winona State before playing Indianapolis and divisional foe Davenport, all of whom lost in the first round of the playoffs. 

The Cardinals will also face Grand Valley State, a team that won the GLIAC and made it to the quarterfinals in 2022. 

Their toughest test of the season will come on Oct. 7. when they visit the two-time defending NCAA Division II national champions Ferris State.
