Highlights: Ferris State Vs. GVSU

On the heels of its second consecutive national championship , Ferris State football is looking to be the second Division II program in history to make it three straight.

Ever since Tony Annese became the head coach in 2012, Ferris State has been one of the most competitive programs in the country.

After missing the playoffs in his first two seasons, Annese led the Bulldogs to eight straight NCAA Division II playoff appearances, including the national championships in 2021 and 2022.

Five Things We Learned From The GLIAC’s Football Media Day

Nine Quarterbacks To Watch Division II Football In 2023

Ferris State will have continuity at the quarterback position with both Mylik Mitchell and Carson Gulker returning to the team.

Last season, Ferris State had a two-quarterback system that saw both players get a good amount of reps.

Mitchell transferred from Kent State ahead of the 2022 season and was a huge part in the Bulldogs success. He more reps than Gulker last season due to the fact that he’s a conventional passing quarterback, unlike Gulker.

Last season, Mitchell threw for 1512 yards and six touchdowns.

Gulker on the other hand,  is a mobile quarterback who used his legs much more than his arm last season.

In 2022, Gulker rushed for 738 yards, which led to him being named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year.

Though most coaches like to have one starter play throughout the year, Ferris State has found success doing the opposite.

The Bulldogs have the best of both worlds at quarterback, with Mitchell being such an aerial threat, and Gulker being a dominant rusher.

Ferris State To Face Montana On The Road

In what could possibly be its best opponent of the entire season, Ferris State will travel to Missoula to play FCS program Montana in Week 3.

Montana is one of the better programs in its division, having made the playoffs 27 times since 1982.

Since 1995, Montana has made it to the FCS championship game seven times, losing five and winning twice (1995 and 2001).

To make things even harder, the Bulldogs will be playing in one of the most scenic, yet hostile, environments in all of college football in Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
