Hours after Davenport Football rallied to stay undefeated in GLIAC play, Grand Valley State, with program legend Brian Kelly at Lubbers Stadium, kept pace against Michigan Tech on Oct. 28.

The Lakers (7-1, 4-0) beat Michigan Tech (4-4, 1-4) 44-13 as the No.3-team in the country eyes their final-game showdown with Davenport in two weeks.

Kelly was in the building for GVSU Homecoming while his current team, LSU football, had the week off. Kelly led the Lakers to two NCAA Division II National Championships during his 13 years as head coach. Kelly’s son, Kenzel, is a linebacker for the Lakers.

Kelly saw the Lakers take care of business.

GVSU led 21-3 in the second quarter and 21-10 at halftime. They built a 34-10 lead in the third quarter before pulling away in the final frame.

Quarterback Cade Peterson had three rushing touchdowns for 101 yards, while the other quarterback, Avery Moore, scored two rushing touchdowns. Peterson added a passing touchdown and 164 yards on 15-of-21 passing with two interceptions.

GVSU plays Davenport (8-0, 4-0) on Nov. 11 at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Michigan. That game is streaming on FloFootball and the FloSports app.

For Michigan Tech, the nightmare GLIAC season continues.

The Huskies were 3-0 before starting league play, but have now lost to the league’s three ranked teams (No. 11 Davenport, No. 8 Ferris State and No. 3 GVSU) and are 4-4 overall.

Ferris State still has a shot of winning the league after the Bulldogs, the defending national champions, won 56-0 over American International. Ferris State (6-1, 3-1) will need to win out and have GVSU and Davenport suffer a loss down the stretch to claim a share of the league title.

Who Are the Past Division II Football Champions? A Look Back After 50 Years

How Does The NCAA Division 2 Football Playoffs Work?

The 50th anniversary of the NCAA Division II Playoffs will feature 28 teams in a single elimination tournament.

How Division II decides which teams go to the postseason, however, is through a completely different process than the postseasons of the FCS and Division III.

The Super Region system is unique to Division II, where no conference has an automatic bid to the playoffs, and the postseason places are decided by the top-ranked teams in each of the four Super Regions – groups of conferences (and potentially independents) in a similar geographic area.

A top-10 Super Regional ranking of all the conference’s members in a particular Super Region is released each of the final three weeks of the regular season. At the end, the teams considered by the selection committee to make up the top 7 in each Super Region, qualify for their Super Region’s playoff bracket, where the No. 1 seed receives a first-round bye.

For 2023, Super Region 1 mainly consists of Midwestern/eastern schools, Super Region 2 the southeast, Super Region 3 the Midwest, mid-south and Great Plains and Super Region 4 much of Division II’s northern and western membership, plus Texas.
