Reese Poffenbarger Transfers To Miami Football After Stellar UAlbany Career
Coming off a stellar 2023 leading UAlbany to its first Coastal Athletic Association championship, quarterback Reese Poffenbarger is transferring to Miami.
Reese Poffenbarger is bound for Miami. News of the UAlbany quarterback and offensive leader of the best season in Great Danes history committing to Mario Cristobal's Hurricanes broke on Jan. 8.
Poffenbarger confirmed reports via social media.

Originally a recruit to Old Dominion, Poffenbarger landed at UAlbany before the 2022 season looking for an opportunity to show what he could do. Greg Gattuso and the UAlbany offensive coaching staff provided just such an opportunity, and Poffenbarger flourished in two seasons quarterbacking the Great Danes.

He went 172-of-288 on pass attempts in 2022, threw 20 touchdowns against only three interceptions, and piled up 2,366 yards.
A strong debut campaign with UAlbany foreshadowed the historic season to come, both for Poffenbarger and the Great Danes overall. His 36 touchdown passes and 3,603 yards both led the Football Championship Subdivision.
UAlbany scored 28.4 points per game and 29.9 against FCS opponents, with a streak of four games posting at least 30 points through the national quarterfinals.
The Great Danes' CAA championship was their first ever and a prelude to both the first quarterfinals and semifinals appearances ever for UAlbany.
When Poffenbarger announced via social media he was entering the transfer portal in December, he thanked Gattuso and the UAlbany coaching staff for "taking a chance on" the quarterback, and helping to "revive a confidence needed at a low point" in Poffenbarger's football career.
Reese Poffenbarger is the second Great Dane transfer to land with a high-profile member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Defensive end Jared Verse departed UAlbany for Florida State after winning CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021. Verse went from being one of the most dominant linemen in the CAA to the top linemen in the ACC immediately.
Poffenbarger aims to have a similar impact at Miami. He'll compete to replace Tyler Van Dyke, the Hurricanes starter since 2021, who is transferring to Wisconsin.
As for UAlbany's quarterback vacancy, the spot will be wide open when spring 2024 practices begin. No Great Dane other than Poffenbarger attempted more than one pass in 2023.
The program's December signing class includes a promising freshman, Van Weber, a 6-foot-4 playmaker from New Jersey.
No matter who steps into the quarterback vacancy, he'll have a lofty precedent to meet. Poffenbarger leaves UAlbany with an unparalleled legacy, helping set the foundation for what Gattuso said during the playoff run he hopes to be the yearly standard.
