Anderson Will Play at the New Spero Financial Field at Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium
Dr. Melvin and Dollie Younts provided a $3 challenge gift to help support the launch of Anderson University football and the development of other programs at the school. Spero Financial added to the fund when it agreed to a 25-year naming rights deal.
The new facility sports both primary benefactors' names. Spero Financial Field at Melvin and Dollie Younts Stadium broke ground in May 2022 and will host its first-ever official game in September 2024.
Of note, it's not the only football venue in the Palmetto State to don the Younts name. North Greenville plays at Younts Stadium, built in 2005, thanks to a donation from the Younts family.
Anderson's stadium seats more than 4,000, and has already once before exceeded its listed capacity for football.
Anderson Drew More Than 5,000 Games To Its 2023 Homecoming Scrimmage
Although the 2024 season marks Anderson's first of varsity competition, the Trojans have been on the field plenty — and played for a sizable audience.
In October 2023, Anderson football its inaugural Homecoming "game" — which was, in fact, an intrasquad scrimmage. The contest may not have been real, but the energy the community, students and alumni base showed was.
More than 5,000 fans watched the Trojans' open scrimmage and informal introduction to the program.
Coach Bobby Lamb Comes With An Impressive Resume
Bobby Lamb, introduced in July 2021 as the first-ever coach in Anderson Trojans football history, isn't new to building a program from scratch. Lamb helped launch the program at Mercer with his hire in 2011.
Mercer hadn't sponsored football since 1941, shuttering its program after the United States entered into World War. Beginning with its inaugural 2013 campaign under Lamb, however, Mercer became a consistently competitive member of the Football Championship Subdivision's Southern Conference.
After Lamb took over as head coach of his alma mater in 2002, Furman went to the Playoffs four times in five seasons and reached the national semifinals in 2005.
The Lamb family tree has sprouted limbs around college football, with Taylor Lamb — Bobby's son — coaching quarterbacks at the University of Virginia; and Bobby's nephew, Tre, heading into his first season as head coach at East Tennessee State after guiding Gardner-Webb to its first-ever FCS Playoffs appearance.
Lamb's coaching staff, meanwhile, features offensive coordinator Seth Strickland, who previously worked at Albany State. Strickland has winning experience in Div. II, overseeing quarterbacks and the passing game for the Rams in their 2021 NCAA Playoff season. He also worked as an assistant at prep powerhouse IMG Academy.
Defensive coordinator Brett Hickman previously coached at Gardner-Webb and North Greenville.
The Inaugural Trojans Roster Features Heavy In-State Influence
Along with a head coach whose football legacy is rooted firmly in South Carolina, the inaugural Anderson Trojans football roster includes 56 players from the state. The program's 2024 signing class added 16 South Carolina prospects, including Independent Mail All-Area honoree Austin Beers of Wren High School.
Among Anderson's out-of-state contingent is a transfer with experience playing college ball in South Carolina. Quarterback Tyler Wesley of St. Cloud, Florida, landed with the Trojans after starting for FCS program Presbyterian in 2023.
Wesley passed for 1,941 yards and 13 touchdowns as a freshman and led the Blue Hose with 486 yards rushing.
