The Maine football team has terrific offensive weapons in wide receiver Joe Gillette and tight end Cooper Heisey, who both were preseason All-CAA honorable mentions, while the Black Bears were slated to finish 13th in the 16-team conference.

Maine’s record in 2023 included a 1-7 effort in CAA play. 

Within the conference, the Black Bears were eighth in total yards per game (359.8), but last in rushing – by a bunch, collecting just 79.7 yards per game on the ground. Stony Brook was one spot higher with 104.1, and Hampton set the pace with 216.4. 

A more balanced offensive attack would make the squad less predictable. Perhaps the answer to Maine’s rushing woes will be among the 11 players who have transferred into the program.
