A season ago, Monmouth was second in scoring (32.5) and yards per game (431.5) in the Coastal Athletic Association, but that didn’t translate to victories. Only New Hampshire scored more points per game (37.5) and had more yards (434.4), but that didn’t help Wildcats either.

In fact, combining their number of victories for the season only tied them with the trio of conference champions – UAlbany, Villanova and Richmond – all of whom were 7-1 in conference play. 

Monmouth was 4-7 overall in 2023, including a 3-5 record in the CAA. New Hampshire was 6-5 overall and 4-4 in conference action. 

How is Monmouth going to rebound in 2024, especially without running back Jaden Shirden, who led the conference last year in rushing yards (1,478) and ground yards per game (134.4), both by a wide margin?

Two Monmouth Hawks received honorable mentions on the preseason All-CAA list – senior quarterback Derek Robertson and senior kick returner TJ Speight, while running back Sone Ntoh made the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 List.

Ntoh is in his final season of eligibility after playing three seasons at Harvard, and he’s a solid replacement as the top backfield threat for the Hawks. Even while playing behind Shirden last season, Ntoh still managed to finish second in the conference in rushing touchdowns with 14, one behind Delaware’s Marcus Yarns. Ntoh rushed for 411 yards last season on 56 carries.

The Hawks again will be led by head coach Kevin Callahan, the only leader that team has ever known. This will be his 32nd season in charge. During that time, he has put together a record of 182-142. His win total is first among active FCS coaches.
