Western New Mexico went to 2-8 in 2023, with the two wins coming against Sul Ross and rival Eastern New Mexico in the Green Chile Bowl. Billy Hickman will enter his second full year as head coach of the Mustangs.

He was previously the team's offensive coordinator. Hickman has a tough job pulling WNMU up from the dregs of a very competitive conference. The Mustangs will have to come out fast if they hope to have a chance. 

While Western New Mexico was picked to finish ninth in the conference coaches poll, their first three conference opponents were picked to finish in the top three spots, UT Permian Basin, Angelo State and Central Washington.

The D2 college football playoffs begin on November 23, 2024.

The 2024 Division II College Football Championship game will be played December 21 at the McKinney ISD Stadium in McKinney, Texas.
