The Rhode Island Football team has not reached the playoff in nearly 40 years, but the Rams hope to end that drought following a 6-5 season in 2023. 

The Rams open the season picked to finish eighth in the CAA and face a challenging non-conference that includes a trip to Minnesota to face the Golden Gophers in Week 2. But first, they face a tough Holy Cross team to open the season at 7 p.m. EST on Aug. 31 at Meade Stadium in Kingston, R.I.

Holy Cross received votes in the FCS preseason poll and comes to Kingston with a 9-1 all-time record against Rhode Island. 

Despite the playoff drought, the Rams and coach Jim Fleming, who begins his 10th season at the helm, are aiming for their fifth straight winning season. That's something they haven’t done since their last playoff appearance in 1985. 

The Rams climbed as high as No. 17 in the FCS polls in 2023 and the drought appeared to be at an end, but back-to-back losses to Richmond and UAlbany in October and a 1-point loss to end the season against Towson helped keep them from the postseason.
