Minnesota Duluth Football Pulls Away After Close 1st Half Vs. UNM | Recap
Northern Michigan football came to play defense in the opener, but the offense struggled against No. 17 Minnesota Duluth on Aug. 29.
Northern Michigan Football held the No. 17-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs to just 13 points in the first half and force three punts and stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down as the defense looked improved from 2023.
But the offense couldn't muster much and the defense began to crack in the second half as Minnesota Duluth went on to win 35-7 on Aug. 29 at the Superior Dome.

The season opener showed a feisty Wildcat defense in the first half as Minnesota Duluth star quarterback Kyle Walljasper was forced into several tough throws. But after halftime, Walljasper found his footing and the Bulldogs never looked back.
The Wildcats will turn their attention to Kentucky Wesleyan on Sept. 5 and then face UW-La Crosse on Sept. 14 before returning home and on FloFootball for Alma on Sept. 21.
The Bulldogs will host Minnesota State Morehead on Sept. 14 for their next game.

The Wildcats scored late in the fourth quarter on an impressive over-the-shoulder touchdown catch by Michael Love from Aidan Hoard.
The Wildcats still trail UMD 35-7.

With the backups in, Minnesota Duluth scored the longest touchdown of the day as Jacob Eggert connected with Chuck Gilbert III for a 56-yard touchdown.
It's now 35-0 in the Superior Dome.

Minnesota Duluth Football Overcoming Penalties
The Bulldogs have committed five penalties for 45 yards against UNM that have put the team in tough situations. Meanwhile the Wildcats have a clean slate.
It hasn't mattered. The Bulldogs are on the cusp of another score with 49 seconds left in the third quarter.

After Kyle Walljasper made several risky throws that nearly ended in a turnover, the Bulldogs decided to punt on fourth down. The Wildcat defense has been on point except for the third drive of the game that ended in a Duluth touchdown.

Northern Michigan Football Defense Up To Challenge
The Wildcats forced another punt and appear up to the challenge against Duluth, who scored 47 points against the Wildcats in 2023.

Kicking is not popular in Marquette, Michigan today. The Wildcats failed to convert on 4th down and and the Bulldogs took over near mid-field in their own territory.

The Bulldogs return one of the best mobile quarterbacks in the country in Kyle Walljasper who rushed for 1,071 yards and 16 touchdowns. He added 1,580 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. The redshirt junior quarterback is built like a tank at 6-foot-1, 240 pounds.

Minnesota Duluth Football Still Powered By The Trenches
The Bulldogs averaged more than 240 rushing yards per game last season and it was powered by the offensive line. Veteran offensive lineman Aiden Williams, a sixth-year player, is a big reason. From Anchorage, Alaska, Williams is a two-time second team All-NSIC blocker.
Meanwhile Sam Pitz, one of the best tight ends at the Division II level, is a three-time All-NSIC selection, including twice being on the first team.

Northern Michigan has dominated the series with a 2-11 record. But the 2023 matchup was the first time the two schools had met in 25 years.
