Costly mistakes thwarted the Hampton Football team’s ability to win in Week 1 as the Pirates kept Morgan State drives alive and killed their own with eight penalties for 70 yards.

It all added up, expect for Morgan State who committed nine penalties for 79 yards,  as The Bears took the season-opener, 30-28 on Aug. 31 in Hampton, Va.

The Pirates twice cut the Bears’ second half lead to two points, but it was two costly third down defensive holding penalties on a long drive in the third quarter that led to three points for the Bears.

After Ja’Quan Snipes’ 2-yard touchdown cut Morgan State's lead to two points, Morgan State went 44-yards in the first two plays of the fourth quarter to push the lead back to 30-21.

The Pirates were on the verge of answering just as quickly, but a 54-yard run by star Elijah Burris was wiped away by a holding penalty.

The Pirates also survived a costly fourth quarter turnover, and got the ball back and scored a touchdown via a 29-yard reception by Kevin Johnson.

Kicking off with 4:29 left in the game, the Bears never gave Hampton the ball back, with quarterback Tahj Smith converting on third and seven on the final drive.

Hampton will play Division II Virginia Union on FloFootball and the FloSports app in week 2, while Morgan State will travel to Towson and also play on FloFootball and the FloSports app.
