Richmond Football Stymied By Tough Wofford Defense | CAA Recap

Despite late push by the Spiders, Wofford defense stays strong and they upset No. 15 Richmond on the road.

Richmond Football fell to 0-2 on the season after losing its home opener to Wofford on Sept. 7.
The team's offensive stats were very similar with Richmond actually having a slight edge in offensive yards (316-304). Additionally, Richmond was also more efficient on third down. The difference was absolutely the defense of the Terriers who forced four turnovers which accumulated for 16 points as opposed to none by the Spiders. 

Both teams struggled offensively for the majority of the first half, improving steadily by the third quarter where Wofford was able to take control. Despite Richmond pushing back towards the end of the fourth quarter, the Wofford defense held strong, fittingly ending the game with their fourth interception.

Next week the Terriers will take on William and Mary in their home opener while Richmond will host Charleston Southern.

Annoor comes up with another interception, ending Richmond's drive at the Wofford 24 yard line, crushing their hopes as they attempted to complete the comeback.

After forcing a quick 3 and out Richmond looks to even it up with just over two minutes to go in the game.

Coleman With The Keeper

Richmond makes it a one score game behind the legs of Camden Coleman who had a long QB run before punching it in for 6. They trail by seven with 3:48 to go.

With only a few opportunities left in the game to cut down Wofford's lead, the Spiders make a change at quarterback as Camden Coleman enters the game.

Ryan Ingram runs it in as the Wofford Terriers take a 26-12 lead with 6:03 to go in the game.

INT Number Three For Wofford Ends Richmond's Drive

Richmond looked like they were about to score and cut the lead down or take it as they slowly marched down the field, but an interception by Benny Radicia ends the drive and gives the ball right back to Wofford.

Fourth Quarter Field Goals

Wofford kicks off the fourth quarter with a 41 yard field goal, extending their lead to 7.

Richmond fails to score and Wofford takes over, making their way deep into Richmond territory as quarter three comes to a close.

The Terriers' drive comes to an end at the Richmond 37 as they punt and go back on defense.

Richmond Struggles To Get Going

The Spiders are unable to get out of their own territory as they are forced to punt, giving the ball back to the Terriers who seem to have all the momentum at the moment.

A 12 yard pass to Jordan Davis gives Wofford six, but the two point conversion fails. They take their first lead of the afternoon at 16-12.

Amir Annoor comes up huge with an interception that gives Wofford the ball in the red zone and a prime opportunity to take the lead.

The Richmond defense quickly forces a three and out, as their offense takes over at their own 29 yard line.

Wofford starts the second half with the ball as they look to take the lead for the first time of the game.

Despite both teams having slow offensive starts, they pick it up and get points on the board in the second quarter. The difference is the safety on Wofford's first drive that has Richmond holding on to a 2 point lead. Wofford now has 100 yards of total offense and Richmond has 196, a notable stat considering that Wofford was deep into the negatives for the majority of the first half.

Wofford Finds Offensive Rhythm

Amari Odom's pass to J.T. Smith is reeled in the end zone as the Terriers cut the lead down to 2 and the half comes to a close.

Richmond scores the first rushing touchdown of the afternoon as Aziz Foster-Powell runs it in for six for his first collegiate touchdown. The extra point by Brandon Peskin is good and with two minutes to go in the half, both offenses seem to have woken up. 

Wofford Gets On The Board

A 36 yard field goal cuts the Richmond lead back to two as Wofford gets into positive total yardage with five minutes left in the first half.

Big Interception For Wofford Defense

Isaiah Wadsworth comes up huge, stopping the Richmond drive with a pick, as the team looks to gain momentum and find offensive success.

Wofford Remains Scoreless

Wofford continues to struggle offensively as they have -7 total yards of offense. Their defense looks to hold Richmond again as the offense is unable to get going.

Richmond Offense Gets On The Board

A 21 yard field goal gives the Richmond offense their first points of the game as as they extend their lead to 5-0.

Richmond has scored the lone two points of the first quarter from their early safety, but also end the first quarter driving and are deep into Wofford territory looking to build onto their lead.

Ten minutes into the first quarter and both teams have failed to get much going offensively as they continue to exchange punts.

The Richmond defense stays hot as they quickly force a 3 and out and look to get their offense going from their own 27 yard line.

41 Yard Field Goal Attempt Is No Good

After a series of incomplete passes, Richmond unsucessfully attempts a 41 yard field goal, putting Wofford back on offense.

A huge punt by Aaron Trusler sets up the Richmond defense to sack Amari Odom in the end zone for the safety. Richmond takes the 2 point lead four minutes into the first quarter.

Next Up For Both Teams

The Wofford Terriers will head home next week for their season opener against William and Mary. The Richmond Spiders will be at home again next week, taking on the visiting team of Charleston Southern.

Wofford Football Showcases Resilience In Fourth Quarter Push

The Wofford Terriers showcased their grit and perseverance as they scored 10 unanswered points to come back on the road at Gardner-Webb to open the season with a victory. It was a young offense coupled with a more experienced defense that was the driving force behind this comeback. Special teams was a struggle, something head coach Shawn Watson noted needed to be cleaned up for the Terriers to continue to find success this season.

Youth Shines For Richmond Spiders In Season Opener

Despite Virginia outscoring Richmond 17-0 in the first quarter, a lead they easily maintained, plenty of young stars stood out as the game progressed for the Spiders. After a two plus hour weather delay, the Spiders saw several redshirt freshmen and other young players making their debut with a bang, recording numerous runs, sacks, and tackles to show some fight throughout the second half.
