It still may be too early in the 2024 college football season to truly gauge where teams stand, and it would be equally unfair to let what happened for each team last year carry too much weight.

Historically, though, Towson and Villanova have been closely matched when playing each other, with Villanova holding an 11-7 advantage in their all-time series. 

They’ve alternated wins over their last five meetings, with Villanova taking the 2023 contest 33-10, so does that mean the Tigers should be expected to pull off an upset of the ranked and reigning Coastal Athletic Association co-champions?

The Wildcats seem to have carried the momentum of a 2023 playoff run into the new campaign and are 2-0, defeating Youngstown State at home (24-17) and Colgate on the road (28-3).

Villanova enters this week ranked No. 4 in the AFCA FCS Top 25 Poll and No. in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll.

Towson isn’t on the national radar after a loss at Cincinnati and a win at home against Morgan State, so sneaking into Villanova Stadium and picking up a win to kick off conference play makes for a great storyline. 

The Wildcats are coming off a 7-1 conference-winning season in which they were 10-3 overall. Towson finished in the middle of the then 15-team CAA at 4-4, while going 5-6 overall.
