On the way to back-to-back Division II national championships in 2021 and 2022, Ferris State seemed to have very few weaknesses. Even the team that tried to run it back last season had the potential to complete the task.

The Ferris State team that opened the 2024 season against Pittsburg State, however, was far from the championship-caliber squad fans have grown to expect, and the result was a mistake-filled 19-3 loss in which Ferris State only had 171 yards of total offense.

The Bulldogs regrouped and took out their frustrations on Lake Erie in their own home opener, putting up 35 first-quarter points on the way to a 56-3 victory in front of more than 6,000 fans.  

This week, Ferris State will play host to Ashland, a talented team that came within a game of winning the Great Midwest Athletic Conference last season. Kickoff at Top Taggart Field will be at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Ferris State has become a perennial powerhouse in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and in Division II overall, though conference foe Grand Valley State continues to be a thorn for the Bulldogs.

GVSU handed Ferris State its only loss in 2022 and took down the Bulldogs twice in 2023, including in the first round of the Division II playoffs to deny them a chance at a third consecutive title.

The two won’t meet this year for the Anchor Bone Classic until Oct. 26, so the Bulldogs have time to prepare. The next obstacle in the quest for redemption is Ashland, which finished second behind Tiffin in the GMAC last season.

Though it wasn’t the formal championship bracket, Ashland did have the chance finish its season against McKendree in the America’s Crossroads Bowl, winning 23-20.

So far in 2024, the Eagles are 0-1. They lost to Indiana University of Pennsylvania 19-10 on Sept. 5. 

Ashland and Ferris State have met 25 times since 1974, with Ashland winning the first five contests and 14 overall. The Bulldogs have won the last four meetings, however – 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
