Week 2 of the Division II Football season was certainly a rough one for the Lone Star Conference as they come away with two wins from the two New Mexico teams - Western and Eastern New Mexico.

This week also featured the second conference matchup of the week as Eastern New Mexico defeated Sul Ross State 36-17. Western New Mexico defeated Adams State 46-36 for the conference's second win of the weekend.

One of two ranked team of the conference, UT Permian Basin fell out of the rankings after suffering a 40-23 loss against a now 2-0 CSU Pueblo who entered the rankings at No. 25 this week. The other, Central Washington, falls from No. 7 to No. 10 after suffering a 26-7 loss at San Diego.

Takeaway 1: The LSC Has The Ability To Compete With The Best

Despite it being a rough week for the conference in terms of wins and losses, several teams showed immense promise as they competed with some top teams. Midwestern State generated 400+ yards of offense on the road against nationally ranked Western Colorado as they fell in a narrow 38-33 loss. Central Washington may have lost, but stays ranked in the top ten nationally, and despite slipping out of the rankings, UT Permian Basin absolutely has the ability to make some noise.

Youth has continued to shine for numerous teams with two thirds of the conference players  of the week being underclassmen through two weeks. Players like sophomore defensive end DJ Moore of Eastern New Mexico and sophomore kick returner Jaiden Burnett of Midwestern State have truly shone in their first two weeks. As they continue to develop, they definitely have the potential to shine not only within the conference but on the national stage as well.

Takeaway 2: Offensive Struggles Across The Board

Apart from Midwestern State's 441 yards of offense, the Lone Star Conference seems to be struggling to generate yardage and get on the board offensively. While most of the teams have been able to generate some level of success running the ball, they all seem to be struggling with getting the offense through the air going and have failed to generate any sort of offensive momentum.

Numerous teams were able to generate 200+ yards by leaning on the run game  including Western New Mexico and Angelo State, but still they are unable to match the offensive pace of their opponents, especially later in the game. In fact it was the lack of late offensive success that had teams including Angelo State and Midwestern State falling in tight showdowns dictated by less than a score.

The offensive highlight of the week would definitely have to be junior quarterback Sam Jastrab of Midwestern State recording one of the best passing games in program history, finishing 30 of 51 for 395 yards. However as the season continues, teams need to look to gain some sort of offensive momentum that can be sustained to compete at the highest levels.

Takeaway 3: Defenses Have Been A Bright Spot For Most Teams

While the scores might not seem that way, a lot of teams' defensive counterparts have been able to definitely shine with some strong performances.

Despite losing 50-10, Western Oregon's Tyler Copeland had a whopping eight tackles along with an interception. Western New Mexico's Justin Evans had a fourth quarter interception that helped them clinch their 46-36 victory against Adams State. Eastern New Mexico's DJ Moore, the LSC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded six tackles, four solo and three for a loss of 17 yards, alongside a career best two sacks, to help the Greyhounds past new conference member Sul Ross State.

Numerous teams across the board had players make impacts like that, most on the defense, but others like Jaiden Burnett, Sam Jastrab, and Ron Craten have shown glimpses of potential to generate offensive success.
