A visit from Furman University will help the William & Mary Tribe wrap up their nonconference slate and get a final tune-up before the real work begins. 

They’ll meet at Walter J. Zable Stadium at Cary Field in Williamsburg, Virginia, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern. 

Both teams have the start of conference play on the horizon, and they’ll be heading into the next phase of the season from completely different perspectives.

The 2022 season was a special one for the Tribe, who earned a share of the Coastal Athletic Association title (with New Hampshire), advanced to the Division I FCS national quarterfinals and closed the year with an 11-2 overall record.

Unfortunately, William & Mary was well short in its title defense in 2023, despite being the conference’s preseason favorite to win it all again. It was a fall from grace that saw the Tribe land in the middle of the 15-team CAA standings at 4-4 and 6-5 overall.

William & Mary enters its meeting with Furman this week at 2-1 and coming off a 28-21 victory over Wofford. The Tribe are ranked 12th in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25, up one spot after last week’s win. 

The rest of William & Mary’s season will be an eight-game redemption tour of the CAA, beginning with a Sept. 28 meeting with Hampton in Williamsburg. 

Villanova, UAlbany and Richmond shared the CAA crown last season.

Furman, on the other hand, is the reigning champion in the Southern Conference, which the Paladins dominated in 2023. They won their first seven conference games to lock up the title and rode that momentum to the second round of the NCAA Division I FCS Championship. 

The Southern Conference championship in 2023 (at 7-1) was a record 15th title for Furman and first outright win since 1990. The Paladins last co-championship was in 2018.

The Paladins are 2-1 heading into the matchup with William & Mary this week but fresh off a lopsided 48-7 victory against Stetson. 

Their own title defense will begin next week when they host Samford in Greenville, South Carolina. Furman also will end its 2024 season with eight consecutive conference games.
