Grand Valley State Football Holds Off UW-La Crosse At Home, 20-13

The Grand Valley State University Lakers are back at home in Allendale, Michigan, and have invited the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles to join them for Family Day at Lubbers Stadium.

The Eagles probably would like nothing more than to spoil the special occasion, end GVSU’s winning ways and keep their own winning streak intact heading into the start of conference play next week.

The teams will do battle at Lubbers Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. Eastern, with the Lakers looking to maintain their advantage in the series. They've met two other times. The first was in the 1978 NAIA Division I Playoffs, with GVSU winning 24-14. The most recent was in 2021, in Allendale, with the Lakers winning 45-24.

Grand Valley State is 2-0 in 2024 and two weeks from the start of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, which will fill the final seven weeks of GVSU’s schedule. The Lakers are the reigning conference champions.

In their win over Colorado State University-Pueblo, the Lakers led 17-0 at halftime but nearly saw the ThunderWolves steal the win with a late rally. GVSU was outscored 21-7 in the second half, including two touchdowns in the final quarter.

UW-La Crosse, the 2023 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, opened its current campaign with a 35-0 win over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a 35-21 victory against struggling Northern Michigan.

Should UW-La Crosse have beaten Northern Michigan by more? Are the Eagles ready for a team that has been dominant in the GLIAC and Division II in recent years?

Did GVSU’s second-half performance against CSU-Pueblo expose weaknesses the Eagles can use to their advantage, or was it simply just a bad half at the office for the Lakers?

Follow the action live, as FloFootball provides news and notes from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse vs. Grand Valley State University football game.
