3 Lone Star Conference Football Takeaways From Week 3

Week 3 for the Lone Star Conference shows a lot of promise as teams go 6-3 after struggling in Week 2.

After a rocky Week 2 for the Lone Star Conference, Week 3 definitely was an improvement as six teams came home with victories.

It was evident after this past weekend that the LSC teams know how to fight and pull off gritty wins as numerous games were won by a single score or had a late come back. Even Western Oregon, who fell to FCS program Cal Poly was tied with the Mustangs till midway through the third quarter and were really giving it their all, falling just short as Cal Poly put up seventeen unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Week 3 allowed for numerous LSC teams to slowly find their footing and settle down, leading to numerous wins in the last week of the non-conference. This weekend will begin the conference season and should really help further dictate and establish the identity of the Lone Star Conference as teams will slowly pull away as frontrunners, something that is a bit unclear at the moment.

Takeaway 1: 600+ Yards Of Offense Fuels Falcon Win

UT Permian Basin was dominant on both sides of the ball in their 67-14 win over Adams State, but their offense really shone. Their run game in particular was able to get going as they ran for over 300 yards. Kory Harris's 155 rushing yards paired with quarterback Dylan Graham's four touchdown passes helped them find the end zone a whopping nine times. The balance of their offense was on full display, as they threw and ran for 306 yards each. If they are able to maintain this offensive groove, the Falcons should easily find themselves on top of the LSC final standings. Their first challenge is just this upcoming week as they face a tough defense in Texas A&M Kingsville.

Takeaway 2: Sul Ross State Shows Some Fight

Newcomers to the Lone Star Conference Sul Ross State fought Wayland Baptist in a dramatic, emotional overtime game that showcased their pure grit and fire. This game featured just about everything imaginable, a pick six, a record-breaking punt return, and long field goals. Despite the late push by Wayland State that gave them all the momentum, Sul Ross State came up huge towards the end of the game clawing back in for a victory. Sul Ross State got their first win of the season behind quarterback Andrew Martinez throwing for a personal record of 343 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Takeaway 3: A&M Kingsville Rallies Behind Defense

While numerous LSC teams shone on the offensive end this week, Texas A&M Kingsville really rallied behind their defense in a relatively low scoring 27-7 win against Mississippi College. The defense absolutely led the way, forcing two fumbles, turning Mississippi College over on downs, hauling in a pick, and creating plenty of trouble in the trenches. Their offense rallied behind their running backs and run game to put points on the board, but its defense was 100% the star of the night. Facing UT Permian Basin, it will certainly be interesting how A&M Kingsville is able to handle the high powered UT Permian Basin offense.
