Cortland Football Prevails vs. Susuqehanna With Strong Second Half | Recap

No. 2 SUNY Cortland remains unbeaten as they survive against Susquehanna in a rematch of their only loss of the 2023-2024 season.

 No. 2 SUNY Cortland Football survived on the road against No. 11 Susquehanna, avenging their lone loss of a season ago. 

The defending national champions struggled early on, trailing by as much as 17 throughout the first half of the game, only getting thier first lead halfway through the third. But in the end, they were able to do just enough to scrape by the Susquehanna River Hawks. The run game was huge for the Red Dragons as they got on the board largely thanks to the legs of Ethan Gallo and Zac Boyes. 

It was an exciting game that truly came down to the last seconds, eerily similar to their matchup a year ago that came down to a last second field goal. Despite Susquehanna's late push to cut the Cortland lead to 2, the Red Dragons were really able to effectively burn the clock in the fourth quarter, helping them pull away with a win. 

Susquehanna will be heading on the road next week to face Western New England while Cortland returns home to face Morrisville. And despite both teams struggling to get going at times, it is safe to see these are certainly two top teams to watch out for as the season progresses.

Final: Cortland 40, Susquehanna, 38

In yet another tight matchup between these two teams, Cortland is finally able to pull away with a win as they beat the River Hawks 40-38 with a dominating second half performance.  

Susquehanna Scores Again, But Still Trail

Despite Josh Ehlrich finding Hunter Morgenroth in the end zone to bring it to a 2 point game, there are only 30 seconds left on the clock and Susquehanna has to hope for a miracle to be able to pull this one off. 

Ethan Gallo Scores Again

Ethan Gallo punches it in again as Cortland extends their lead to two scores. 

Susquehanna Gives The Ball Right Back

Susquehanna quarterback Josh Ehlrich is sacked on the first play of their drive and loses the football as Cortland recovers it and looks to score again.

Cortland Fumble Ends Long Drive

Cortland looked like they were about to score again but fumble deep into the Susquehanna territory as their defense now  looks to stop the River Hawks on their potential last stand.  

Susquehanna Turns It Over On Downs

Cortland has all the momentum as they get the ball back and look to continue to extend their lead.  

Cortland Scores First In The Fourth

Ethan Gallo continues to shine as he punches it in to give Cortland the second lead of their game at 33-31.

After A Scoreless Start, Both Teams Strike

After both teams remaining scoreless till halfway through the third, Cortland gets their first lead of their game at 27-24 as Ethan Gallo punches it in. But Susquehanna was not to be deterred as Josh Ehlrich promptly threw a 44 yard bomb bringing the Susquehanna lead back to 4 at 31-27.

Susquehanna dominates in the first half despite a late Cortland push as they hold on to a 4 point lead at the half.

Cortland Has All The Momentum

Cortland stops the River Hawks and gets the ball back, and Zac Boyes punches it in, cutting the lead down to four.

Cortland Cuts The Lead

Ethan Gallo punches it in from seven yard out to make it a 24-14 game. 

Susquehanna Is Rolling

The River. Hawks are dominating on both sides of the ball as they put three more points on the board, extending their lead to 17. 

Cortland Offense Continues To Struggle

Cortland's offense is really unable to get going as they are forced to punt, giving the River Hawks a chance to further extend their lead. 

End Of The First Quarter: Susquehanna, 21 - Cortland, 7

No. 2 Cortland has the ball at the end of the first quarter and are trailing by 14 as they attempt to cut the Susquehanna lead back down to 7.. 

Josh Ehrlich Shines As Susquehanna Scores Again

Josh Ehrlich shows his offensive talent both with his legs and arm as he leads his team down the field again, connecting with Chris Bookter in the end zone as the River Hawks regain their 14 point lead. 

Cortland Storms Back

Cortland follows up Susquehanna's big run with one of their own as Jaden Alfano St John returns the kickoff for a touchdown. 

Rahshan La Mons Takes It To The House

A Cortland penalty on 4th and 1 allows for the River Hawks drive to continue and La Mons makes the Red Dragons pay as he explodes on a 61 yard line, extending the Susquehanna lead to 14. 

Cortland Offense Unable To Get Going

Cortland is unable to get past midfield as they punt the ball deep into Susquehanna territory and are forced back onto defense.

Susquehanna Strikes First

Quarterback Josh Ehrlich finds Kyle Howes in the end zone as the River Hawks quickly march down the field and put seven on the board.

Susquehanna wins the toss and elects to receive as they start their drive from their own 19 yard line.

Cortland defeated Lycoming in dominating fashion, winning 70-7. They will be returning home next week to host Morrisville at 1 p.m. next week on Saturday September 28th. 

Susquehanna scraped by SUNY Brockport 27-21. The River Hawks will be back on the road against Western New England next Saturday.
