No. 23 UWA Tigers Earn Upset In 2OT Over No. 12 West Florida On The Road

The lower-ranked West Alabama Tigers came out on top of a 2OT nailbiter, upsetting the West Florida Argonauts in Pensacola, FL.

The West Alabama Tigers went to Pensacola, FL to face off against the West Florida Argonauts in the first Gulf South conference matchup of the 2024 season. The No. 23 ranked Tigers were hoping that their 3-win season would give them the edge over the Argonauts on the road. West Florida was playing its first game since September 5—the longest gap between games the young program has endured.

Pen-Air Field and a full house played host to the duel. West Alabama brought a 3-0 record with wins against Miles, Tusculum, and Limestone. West Florida had one win this season against McKendree, 38-6 on September 5.

It took a while for the Argonauts offense to warm-up, but when they caught on to the defense's energy, they were able to turn the tide in the midst of the third quarter. The Tigers' defense led the charge in the opening minutes of the game, while Arceneaux and the offense found ways to make big plays happen despite the strong defensive play by the Argos.

In the end, it would be the Tigers and Arceneaux who were able to carry the momentum to the win tonight.

After the Tigers get the ball back again, Arceneaux throws a dart for Binion, completing a 25-yard pass for a touchdown. They go for the two-point conversion and Arceneaux runs it in on the edge. After a long review period about whether or not Arceneaux's knee was down before the ball crossed the plane, the call on the field stands.

9 Play Drive For Argos Culminates In The Endzone, UWA 20-17 UWF

This time, it was the Argos that held onto the ball for over 4 minutes of possession. They started on their own 26 and drove the ball down the field, with Stokes connecting for 4 passes for 45 yards along the way. Stokes to Blalock in the end for the touchdown.

Third Quarter Ends With Tigers In Field Goal Range UWA 20-10 UWF

On 3rd and 10 from the 15-yard line, the Argos are able to stop the Tigers on a 3rd down run by Brayden Jenkins. The kick is good from the 29 by Elijah Guyton.

Tigers Offensive Drive Pushes 58 Yards Over 13 Plays, UWA 17-10 UWF

After five first downs and nearly 6 minutes of offensive possession time, the Argos stopped the Tigers' roll at the 21-yard line. The field goal kick is good by Elijah Guyton.

Momentum Fully Swings To UWF After Defensive Stand

Touchdown Argonauts! 73-Yard Bomb Brings UWF Back Into It, UWA 14-10 UWF

A long-awaited connection from Marcus Stokes to Ja'Corey Scott earns the Argonauts their first touchdown of the night. Gulf South Conference D2 Football Scores Update - 8:40 p.m. ET

First Half Score: West Alabama 7-3 West Florida

Defense reigned supreme so far tonight in Pensacola from the Argos in front of a sold-out crowd at Pen-Air Field. The Argonauts are looking for their redshirt freshman Marcus Stokes to get the ball moving on the ground and more completions through the air. Arceneaux has had his moments for the Tigers between great defensive stops.

Defense Continues To Lead Charge For UWF In First Half

A nice play by the Argos defense holds the Tigers to a 4th down to punt.

Bounce Off Punt Gives Argos An Easy Shot At Endzone, UWA 7-3 UWF

After a UWA punt bounced backward towards their kicker giving the Argos the ball on UWA30, we have a first down Argos! Pass completed from Stokes to Jabari Murphy for 15 yards. A few stops later, the Tigers would force the Argos to settle for the field goal. Just more than 2 minutes remain in the first half.

Three And Out, Argos Offensive Disappointment Continues

Gregory continues to do his job with four massive punts for the Argonauts on their home turf. The passing game continues to be a weak spot for Stokes.

Lucky Bounce On Punt Leads To UWA With Ball On Own 1

A great punt by Logan Gregory lands on the 5-yard line and takes a sideways bounce to give the Tigers the ball in the shadow of their own goalpost. Tigers pushed the tempo with a completed 16-yard pass to Kristopher Binion to get some more space. They would end up punting the ball to the Argos shortly after.

Arceneaux Charges Forward At Top of 2nd Quarter, UWA 7-0 UWF

Spencer Arceneaux split the defense and carried the ball for 36 yards for a huge first down coming out of the break. Tight end Caeleb Bass puts the first points on the board, receiving yet another short pass without any coverage in the endzone.

End Of First Quarter: UWA 0-0 UWF

Both defenses have kept things locked down for Arceneaux and Stokes. A few running plays have broken through for the Tigers but most of the offensive gains have been held to 6-7 yards. The passing game seems to be a soft spot for both teams with overthrown passes and near-interceptions.

Arceneaux Keeps It Alive

After a rollout to his left, Arceneaux is able to draw in enough defenders with his feet to give Caeleb Bass the room to catch a 12-yard pass for the first down. It seems like we'll be seeing a lot of Arceneaux passing to Bass tonight.

Stokes And Argos Go 3 And Out - Punt

Stokes got lucky after a dropped interception nearly put the first points on the board—and they wouldn't be coming from the Argonauts offense.

Penalty Calls Balance Things Out For UWA

After a short pass from Arceneaux to Caelab Bass, a holding call on UWA leaves them with first and 20. On a long pass, defensive pass interference gives the Tigers the ball at the UWA 40 with downs reset. A 10-yard sack by Kenneth Martin forced 3rd and 20 which was quickly stopped and turned into a punt. Argos ball on the 25.

Marcus Stokes And Argos Left Unsatisfied With First Possession

UWA's Trevon Stanford makes a huge sack on redshirt freshman Marcus Stokes for a loss 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Not the start that the home crowd wanted to see tonight. Let's see if they can reel it back in on defense.

UWA Receives Ball To Start, Earns Quick First Down But Punts Shortly After

UWA starts tonight's game with the ball from the 24. After three quick short plays, the Argos make a big third down stop after two runs for loss and stuffing a QB run to the outside for no gain by Spencer Arceneaux in the Tigers' first drive of the game.
