We made some bold calls heading into week 5 of the 2024 season and the second weekend of GSC play, including No. 2 Grand Valley State, No. 21 West Florida, and more.

Last weekend, the biggest upset of the week came from West Alabama toppling the West Florida Argonauts in front of a full house in Pensacola. Will it be West Florida's turn to force the upset after dropping 9 spots in the rankings?

We'll do our best to answer those questions with a little bit of data and a whole lot of feelings as we help you decipher which games you should tune into this weekend, live on FloFootball.

No. 17 West Alabama vs No. 3 Valdosta State Football, Sept. 28

**CANCELLED due to incoming weather**

Kickoff: 7:00 p.m. ET

Prediction: Valdosta State wins. Hurricane Helene wins

Impact Player To Watch: Sammy Edwards, QB

The Valdosta State offense is a force to be reckoned with—they cannot be stopped as they come off of a 73-point win over Erskine College in their first GSC conference game. Although the West Alabama Tigers defense is one of the best in the Gulf South holding opponents to an average of 17.8 per game, Valdosta State sits at the top with just 6.0 points allowed per game.

Sammy Edwards leads the GSC with a whopping 70.1% completion rate. He's earned exactly 1000 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in the air and two TDs on the ground. Edwards' favorite receivers are Rodney Bullard and Graeson Malashevich, with 33 receptions for 578 yards total between them in 2024.

No. 21 West Florida vs No. 2 Grand Valley Football, Sept. 28

Kickoff: 3:00 p.m. ET

Prediction: Grand Valley State wins

Impact Player To Watch: Niles King, DL

The GVSU Lakers' defense will be looking to hand West Florida another loss after getting upset by West Alabama in Pensacola last weekend. All eyes will be on Grand Valley's defense and DL Niles King as he looks to add to his impressive resume in 2024. King has earned 6 sacks putting him ahead of all defensive players in the GSC. He's been a big part of forcing turnovers on a defense that has counted 5 already this season.

West Florida's Marcus Stokes has thrown 4 interceptions and only 3 touchdowns this year over their two games.

No. 24 Delta State vs Erskine Football, Sept. 28

**CANCELLED due to incoming weather**

Kickoff: 4:00 p.m. ET

Prediction: Delta State wins. Hurricane Helene wins

Impact Player To Watch: Cole Kirk, QB

Among their four games so far, Delta State has one of the most highly efficient offenses in the GSC. They've only held on to the ball for an average of 26:09 per game, the second-lowest of the conference, but average a whopping 34 points per game, the third-highest in the Gulf South.

If Erskine wants to stay in the game, they're going to have to capitalize on Delta State's propensity to turn over the ball—they have four interceptions this year already. Additionally, punter Dylan Beauford will have to nail all his opportunities when they're inevitably pushed to 4th down. So far this season, he's been a bright spot for the Flying Fleet averaging 41 yards per punt with his longest at 66 yards—10 yards further than the next best in the GSC.

Mississippi College vs Chowan Football, Sept. 28

Kickoff: 1:00 p.m. ET

Prediction: Chowan wins

Impact Player To Watch: Maurice Smith, QB

Although they've only played two games (and lost both), Chowan's quarterback Maurice Smith boasts a GSC-leading 84.5 rushing yards per game. Keeping the ball on the ground for the Hawks is the name of the game against Mississippi College's pass defense. Joshua Gonleh and the Chowan defense will need to pull out all of the stops on the defensive side to keep the Mississippi College running game held back.

They've been successful on the defensive side of the ball in 2024, holding opponents to just 4 yards per play on average.

Shorter vs North Greenville Football, Sept. 28

Kickoff: 7:00 p.m. ET

Prediction: Shorter wins

Impact Player To Watch: Charles Alia, RB

The rematch from their final game of the 2023 season returns as Shorter looks to avenge their 27-17 loss in Tigerville. This year, Shorter makes their transition as an independent team to Conference Carolinas in 2025. Along the way, Charles Alia's running game has led the offense with 174 total yards on 27 attempts.
