Early in the 2024 college football season, it looks like Villanova and Long Island University are programs going in different directions right now.

Sure, Villanova (3-1, 1-0) suffered its first loss of the season last week at Maryland, but the Wildcats were on a bigger stage and challenging themselves by playing up a level and facing a competitive FBS/Big Ten team. 

Long Island is 0-4 to start the season, including losses to two of Villanova’s Coastal Athletic Association foes.

Villanova will host LIU at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pennsylvania, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

Villanova shared the CAA title last year with UAlbany and Richmond, and the Wildcats already are among the front-runners in the conference in 2024 at 1-0. 

Last week’s trip to Maryland should’ve been a good test and tune-up for the Wildcats, while this week’s meeting with Long Island should be a nice confidence boost before seven consecutive conference games to close out the regular season. 

Though college football first was played at Long Island University a century ago, the current iteration of the team – which came with the unification of the athletic programs at its two campuses – has struggled since debuting for the 2019 season. 

That year, the Sharks went 0-10, and they haven’t won more than four games any year since. Their winless start to the 2024 campaign includes a season-opening 27-21 loss to UAlbany and a 28-21 loss to Rhode Island last Saturday. 

Villanova and the Sharks have played two times (2019, 2022), with the Wildcats winning both games – one at home and one on the road.

The Wildcats enter the 2024 contest ranked No. 6 – down one spot – in the latest American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll.
