Grand Valley State Football remains the No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Football AFCA rankings after its win over No. 21 West Florida, 31-7. The Lakers kept pace with No. 1 Harding (Ark.), which blasted No. 20 Henderson State 66-0.

A heated race has broken out between the two powerhouse programs, as the Lakers prepare for its first GLIAC game of the season in Week 6 against Davenport (3-1) at noon on Oct. 5.

The top five of the poll remains dominated by teams that call FloFootball its streaming home. Valdosta State was No. 3 in the poll after its top 25 showdown against West Alabama was canceled due to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Meanwhile, GVSU’s biggest rival Ferris State continues to bound back from its Week 1 loss to Pittsburgh State by walloping AIC last week. That put them at No. 5 in the latest rankings.

Carson-Newman debuted in the rankings at No. 25.

Overall, GLIAC, Gulf South Conference Lone Star Conference and South Atlantic Conference teams had eight teams in the AFC poll. Week 6 will feature all eight in action  streaming on FloFootball.
