Since the addition of football to the Landmark Conference for the 2023 college football season, Susquehanna has been the team to beat – and no one has done it.

The River Hawks breezed through the seven-team conference’s inaugural season of football with a perfect record (6-0), outscoring their Landmark opponents 291-52. The run was part of an undefeated regular season (10-0).

This week marks the start of Landmark play for the 2024 campaign, and Catholic University will be the first team to try and put a blemish on Susquehanna’s clean slate. 

The teams will meet at Catholic’s 3,500-seat Cardinal Stadium in Washington, D.C., on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern. Their only other meeting, which came in 2023, was a 50-21 rout in favor of Susquehanna.

The Susquehanna-Catholic matchup Saturday also will be Family Weekend for the Cardinals, who enter the game with the 2-2 record. The good news, however, is that this season’s two wins came at home against Capital (38-20) and SUNY Morrisville (28-27).

Catholic’s losses this year were against McDaniel in Week 1 (7-3) and last week on the road at Alfred (45-15).

For Susquehanna (3-1), this year’s redemption tour already saw an early stumble, with the River Hawks losing a Sept. 21 nailbiter to reigning Division III national champion, SUNY Cortland, 40-38.

The good news here is that it wasn’t a conference game, as dominating the Landmark Conference again in 2024 is a logical first step toward playoff redemption.

After running untouched through the regular season last year, Susquehanna’s dream run came to an abrupt end in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship, where the River Hawks were upset by Grove City in the game’s final seconds. 

A fourth-and-10 play from the Susquehanna 13 ended with a touchdown and a game-winning extra point for Grove City by a final score of 21-20. The Wolverines lost to Cortland the following week.

Entering the 2024 season, Susquehanna was selected to repeat as the Landmark Conference champion and landed at No. 12 on the AFCA D3 Preseason Coaches Poll.

After last week’s bounce-back win over Western New England, the River Hawks were able to maintain their No. 10 ranking in the latest Division III poll. 

For his performance in the victory, Susquehanna quarterback Josh Ehrlich was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He was 23 of 29 for 205 yards and rushed for a game-high 91 yards.

In 2023, Catholic finished in the middle of the pack with a 3-3 record in conference play and was tabbed to be fifth in the Landmark Conference this year. The Cardinals were 5-5 overall.
