Ferris State Football Tops Roosevelt In GLIAC Opener, 55-13

The Ferris State Bulldogs didn't give Roosevelt the warmest welcome to the GLIAC. They defeated the Lakers 55-13 in the conference opener for both teams.

It took nearly the entire first quarter for the expectedly explosive Ferris State offense to get going against Roosevelt at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday, but the Bulldogs were able to find some momentum in front of the excited homecoming crowd and cruised to a 55-13 victory.

The matchup was the first in history between the two schools and kicked off this year’s conference play for both squads, too.

It was the 400th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game for Ferris State and the first for GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt, which also is new to the NCAA Division II level.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring late in the first quarter with a 65-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trinidad Chambliss to junior running back Katzer Kannon, but the first half really belonged to the two defenses.

Roosevelt’s first touchdown in GLIAC play came with an end zone fumble recovery, while the Bulldogs ended the first half with a 49-yard interception return from junior defensive back Gyasi Mattison.

Ferris State led 28-10 at halftime, and the Bulldogs’ offense took control the rest of the way, adding four touchdowns in the second half to get Ferris State to the 55-point mark for the third time in four games.

In their four contests since being shut down by Pittsburg State in a quiet 19-3 opening-week loss, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 238-26, including a record-setting 84-7 win over American International on Sept. 28.

Chambliss led the offensive effort for Ferris State, just as he has done since the Bulldogs lost Carson Gulker to an injury in Week 2.

Chambliss was 18 for 30 through the air for 224 yards and three touchdowns and added another 43 yards and a score on two rushing attempts.

Kannon was Ferris State’s chart topper in receptions (four for 83 yards) and rushes (eight for 69 yards).

In all, Ferris State rolled up a balanced 448 total yards in the win – 236 through the air and 212 on the ground. It was the seventh consecutive homecoming victory for the Bulldogs.

Defensively, the Bulldogs intercepted Roosevelt quarterback Carson Budke three times and held the Lakers to 265 yards of total offense (186 passing and 79 rushing).

Ferris State improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, the first of seven consecutive conference games on the schedule. Over the last two seasons, the Bulldogs have been the runners-up to Grand Valley State for the GLIAC title.

GVSU opened its own conference schedule Saturday with a 24-7 win over Davenport, which has become the third-strongest team in the GLIAC behind Grand Valley State and Ferris State.

In their own conference debut, the Roosevelt Lakers definitely held their own against one of the nation’s strongest offenses, though the scoreboard may not have reflected the effort.

Despite not scoring an offensive touchdown Saturday, Roosevelt became the second team this season to score more than seven points against Ferris State. The performance included the end zone fumble recovery and a pair of field goals from junior kicker Mauricio Escudero.

Budke handled every snap for the Lakers on Saturday, going 21 for 35 for 186 yards. Freshman Cyrus Zuell was the leading rusher with 73 yards on 22 attempts, while sophomore Keonta Nixon grabbed five passes for 88 yards.

In the loss, Roosevelt had possession of the ball for 35:34, and Ferris State had control for 24:26.

The Lakers fall to 0-4 and 0-1 on the season and will look ahead to a Week 7 visit from Saginaw Valley State, the second of seven consecutive GLIAC games for Roosevelt.

Up next for Ferris State will be a Week 7 trip to Wayne State, perhaps with one eye on the Bulldogs’ Oct. 26 battle with Grand Valley State. In recent years, the Ferris State/GVSU Anchor-Bone Classic has determined the conference champion.
