How To Watch Brown Vs. Rhode Island Football 2024
Before the Rhode Island Rams dive into the heart of their CAA schedule, they’ll welcome Brown to town for one last nonconference game. Here’s what to know.
College football is filled with history, traditions and incredible rivalries.
One of the nation’s oldest programs, Brown University, is nearing 150 years of action, and more than a century of that has included regular meetings with the nearby University of Rhode Island.
The Brown Bears first took the field in 1878 and quickly began still-standing rivalries with other Ivy League teams.
The Rhode Island Rams played their first game in 1895, and despite Brown and URI being just 35 miles apart, they didn’t meet on the gridiron for the first time until 1909.

Their meeting Saturday at Meade Stadium in Kingston, Rhode Island, will be their 108th, making their rivalry one of the oldest in college football. The oldest is Yale-Princeton, which began in 1873.
Brown and Rhode Island will get underway Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern, with the Bears leading the all-time series with a record of 73-32-2.
The Bears won every contest between the two schools from the inaugural edition through 1934, before the Rams snapped one off in 1935. Brown then won another 13 in a row, but URI eventually began winning more regularly.
Rhode Island will make the trip to Kingston this year riding a five-game winning streak in the series.
Since 1981, the annual game has been played for more than just bragging rights. That year, the Governor’s Cup was introduced, and playing for a tangible prize clearly sparked something in the Rams, who have picked up 22 of their 32 wins in the series since.
Rhode Island is 4-1 in 2024 and recently broke into the national rankings.
The Rams are coming off a thrilling 46-44 double-overtime win over Coastal Athletic Association foe Hampton, which helped them join three other teams at the top of the CAA standings with 2-0 records.
In the latest American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll, Rhode Island landed in the No. 21 spot, up four places from the previous week.
The game against Brown will be a one-game break from conference play, before the Rams settle back in for six consecutive CAA contests to close the regular season.
Brown, which plays a 10-game schedule and competes in the eight-team Ivy League, is 2-1 this year and is coming off a 42-35 loss to CAA newcomer Bryant.
