Mississippi College and Valdosta State are at opposite ends of the Gulf South Conference spectrum, and that has been true for most of the last decade.

The MC Choctaws have been last, or second to last, in the conference more years than they haven’t, while the Valdosta State Blazers have been first or second in the GSC standings every year but one, winning at least a share of the title in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

During the same time frame, Valdosta State also claimed its fourth Division II national championship since the turn of the century in 2018, to go along with wins in 2004, 2007 and 2012.

The Blazers have taken aim at another GSC crown in 2024 with a perfect start (2-0), and Mississippi College quickly has plummeted to the bottom of the list with an 0-4 run.

Valdosta State, ranked third in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll, will welcome the Choctaws to Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Georgia, on Saturday, and they’ll get underway at 3 p.m. Eastern.

The Blazers are 6-0 overall but did have their Sept. 28 conference game against West Alabama canceled due to Hurricane Helene. They’re coming off a 32-24 GSC win over North Greenville on Oct. 12.

Mississippi College enters this week’s contest on the heels of back-to-back shutouts that saw the Choctaws outscored 57-0. MC has scored just 44 points this year, with 25 coming in a 27-25 loss to Chowan on Sept. 28.

Since 2014, Valdosta has won eight of its nine meetings with Mississippi College, including a 21-10 victory last season.

The Choctaw’s lone win during the decade came in 2022, a transition year that saw the Blazers finish with an uncharacteristic 5-6 overall record and 2-5 mark in conference action. MC won the meeting that year 49-40 in Valdosta. 

Early in the 2024 GSC schedule, Valdosta State and West Alabama are tied atop the standings at 2-0, West Florida is 2-1, Delta State, Chowan and North Greenville all are 1-1, Erskine is 0-1 and Mississippi College is 0-4.
