There is a tight race going on in the Gulf South Conference, and the West Florida football team made progress in the conference after beating formerly ranked Delta State at home on Saturday.

With the win, West Florida would make up for losing its first conference game against No. 10 West Alabama, who are 2-0 along with the No. 3 Valdosta State Blazers in the Gulf South. After the signature victory, the Argonauts reclaimed a top-25 spot and could keep pace with West Alabama and Valdosta State, assuming they both sustain their supremacy in the conference and the division.

Both teams will also have to play Valdosta State on the road as the season gets closer to an end and could have playoff implications if everybody continues to play the way they have.

Chowan will be at home for the game at Garrison Stadium in Murfreesboro, NC, at 1:00 p.m. after the last-minute comeback win against Shorter last week and are 1-1 in the Gulf South just like West Florida.

The last conference opponent for the Hawks was also the Delta State; however, it was a much different result for them after getting blown out, in which they were without starting quarterback Maurice Smith.

Argos quarterback Marcus Stokes had his best game of the season, and to no surprise, he is the reigning GSC offensive player of the week after being responsible for five touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the team to an overall 3-2 record. Chowan wide receiver Jakobe Lane was also nominated for the award.

West Florida vs. Chowan Series History 

These teams have only faced off three times, and West Florida are the winners of the last two games and have won by a landslide in both of them, including the most recent matchup between the two last season, 52-6. With this in the back of their minds, the Chowan Hawks could be a team on a mission come Saturday.
