SHOCKER IN MAINE. Black Bears Maul No. 5 Villanova Football In FCS Upset

Villanova trailed 15-0 in less than five minutes as Carter Peevy leads Maine Football to one of the biggest upsets of the FCS, CAA 2024 season.

The biggest upset of the FCS football season commence in Orono, Maine Football as the Black Bears (4-3 overall, 2-2 in CAA) crushed the No. 5 team in the country, Villanova, 35-0 on homecoming.

Maine winning in itself is not shocking. But shutting out the Wildcats, picking off preseason CAA Player of the Year Connor Watkins twice and blocking a kick and returning it 70-yard for a touchdown probably wasn't on the bingo card.

Watkins hadn't thrown an interception all season but threw two in the first half as the Wildcats trailed the Black Bears 28-0 at halftime.

The Black Bears started the second half with a soul-sucking drive that lasted more than seven minutes and ended with a Montigo Moss touchdown and Villanova could never must enough to get back in the game.

Maine quarterback Carter Peevy threw three touchdown passes and 172 yards on 16-of-18 passing. Watkins finished 13-of-31 passing with 117 yards and two interceptions.

Maine will get No. 17-ranked Rhode Island on Oct. 26 in Kingston, while the Wildcats will play No. 19. New Hampshire.
