Wildcats Faced With 4th and 1 at 2-Minute Timeout—Will They Go For It? Yep

Nothing like some good suspense building up before the most important drive of the game...

Villanova does go for it with a rush right up the middle by David Avit while the Pirates sending everyone on the line. The referees spot the ball on the line and give them the first down.

Pirates Go For It Again On 4th, Pass Gets Knocked Down

The offensive woes strike again for Hampton Pirates as strong defense from Villanova's secondary forces the stop and gives the Wildcats the ball back in the midfield, on their 48 yard line.

Faced With 3rd and 11, Hampton Wraps Up Nova Offense

Slowly but surely, the Pirates have been chipping away at the field position through punts back and forth. Hampton receives the punt on the 49 yard line. This will be their best field position to start a drive all game.

Pirates Make Another Stop On Defense, Richard Kramer Tallies Sack

Hampton take the ball back on their own 30 yard line to get another shot at scoring to tie things up in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter.

It resulted in another 3 and out for the Pirates before they punted the ball back into the other end—slightly further this time.

Pirates Force Wildcats Into 3 And Out, Get Ball On Own 8

Hampton's defense was able to make another stop on Villanova's offense. They received the punt deep in their own end and hit the release valve via an 18 yard completion to Brennan Ridley. They ended up punting after 3 unsuccessful running plays, flipping the field.

Nine Play, 75-Yard Drive Gives Hampton Late Surge, 20-14 Hampton still trailing

Things seemed to be finally moving for the Pirates after covering half the field in one completed pass play. Snipes was back in his spot and completed two rushes for 4 and 5 yards respectively. On 3rd and 1, Zellous was able to get final stretch himself on the QB sneak.

Tymere Robinson refused to be pulled down and carried the ball for another first down, only 3 yards out from the endzone with a fresh start.

As the clock wound down to 90 seconds left in the 3rd, the Pirates were faced with yet another third down and only 1 yard standing between them and 6 points. Villanova Wildcats timeout. Finally, Zellous runs it in down the middle for the points. Touchdown Hampton.

Jalen Sanchez From Watkins Sets Wildcats Up After 72 Yards Reception, 20-7 Villanova Extends

After a mid-range pass to Sanchez, he turns on the jets to get to the sideline and run it all the way to the endzone. The only way he could be stopped was by a horse collar tackle by Gooden on the 1 yard line. Two plays later, Brendan Bell gets the ball over the plane for a 4 yard rush to seal the deal.

Pirates Forced To Punt It Away, Able To Get A Few Passes

Still unable to finish a conversion on third down, and without the usage of Ja'Quan Snipes, the Pirates weren't able to put together more than one first down and a few pass completions in their first possession of the half.

Villanova Receives Ball To Start Second Half, Earns Field Goal | 13-7

This will be Hampton's big test to see if they can hold the momentum in their favor with the Wildcats getting the ball in the second half. They call the fair catch on their own 5. They continue keeping the ball on the ground with two rushes by David Avit for 2 yards on first down, then another 14 yards. His third run went for 11 yards, dramatically tilting the momentum in Villanova's favor.

Later in the drive, Lucas Kopecky makes a catch for a 15 yard pickup getting Villanova to the 25. Ragland steps in for Avit to help with the running game.

Villanova's 10-play, 52 yard drive took more than 5 minutes off the clock to start the 3rd quarter. Hampton was able to stop Villanova on third down and force the 40 yard field goal from Gettman.

After a timeout on third and nine, Zellous makes another incomplete pass with some serious pressure from the Wildcats. Villanova gets the ball back on their own 39.

Hampton Goes For 4th and 1 On Own 26, Villanova Converts Into Touchdown For Lead, 10-7

Villanova football on the Hampton 26 yard line after Hampton went for a one-yard rush on 4th down with Ja'Quan Snipes getting the ball yet again. A face mask penalty on Hampton's Akie Nance moved the ball even closer to the endzone.

A flurry of rushes from David Avit helped the Wildcats get the ball the rest of the distance. He made an extremely close play at the pylon and reached the ball out at the last moment but it was called no touchdown on the field. Avit received the ball once again and earned his 6th rushing touchdown on the season.

Both Teams Trade Punts Without Much Movement

The two teams went back and forth without much doing on offense for either. The stifling Wildcats defense and Pirates' inability to complete passes or break out on the running game have kept things tamped down. The Hampton secondary is keeping the passing game shut down for the Wildcats as well.

Pirates Go 3 And Out Again, Villanova Gets Ball On 45

Hampton and Villanova are both keeping the ball on the ground with right around 50 rushing yards and only 26 combined yards in the air—just 6 of those are Hampton's. Villanova takes the ball into the second quarter.

Villanova Offense Picks Up Momentum, Gettman Makes It 3-7

Finally able to piece together a mid-range pass with their rushing game, the Wildcats were able to move the ball down the field and keep the momentum moving for a brief moment. Gettman gets another chance, this time from 29 yards out and makes the field goal. Wildcats 3 - 7 Pirates.

Connor Watkins Runs For 32 Yards, Face Mask Brings It Back 15

Villanova Defense Stops Hampton In 4, Receives Punt On 40

Now it's the Pirates' turn to go three and out. They were unable to convert after a stout showing by the Wildcat defense.

Pirates Defense Holds Strong In Their Own End, 7-0 Halfway Through First Quarter

Villanova goes 3 and out again, with Ethan Gettman missing the 42-yard field goal after the offense only gained four rushing yards. They went for a long shot pass down the sideline on third down that was caught by Lucas Kopecky, but was nullified by a penalty because he went out of bounds before the catch.

Pirates get the ball back on the 25.

Villanova's Tyrell Mims Gets First Interception From Chris Zellous's Errant Pass

After just punting it away, the Wildcats offense is back on the field thanks to an interception on first down by Tyrell Mims. This time they'll start with the ball on the Hampton 28 yard line.

Villanova Punts After Three And Out, Making Early Mistakes

Villanova shot themselves in the foot with a dropped snap and a false start leaving them with 3rd and 14 on their own 24. The Hampton defense was able to keep them hemmed in and allow them to make the mistakes. Still some cobwebs to shake off from Halloween, it seems.

Penalties Slow Down First Drive But Pirates Still Score, 7-0 over Villanova

Ja'Quan runs the ball for 35 yards over three plays to get the game started for the Pirates.Villanova was called for three penalties—offsides and pass interference. This gave the Pirates an easy shot at the endzone. The pace of the game was slowed with another two penalties—intentional grounding on the Pirates and then an odd situation where a Wildcat lineman participated after his helmet was torn off which drew another penalty.

The Pirates earned the touchdown off of a 6-yard pass to Kymari Gray to earn the first points of the game.

CAA Football Week 10 Previews & Predictions: It's Playoffs Season

With the changing of the leaves and as you can feel the days getting closer and closer to playoff season, FloFootball writer Kyle Kensing made his predictions for this weekend's CAA football games.

Here's what Kensing had to say about Villanova vs Hampton:

"No CAA team has more to gain in Week 10 than Hampton. The Pirates have won their last two conference games to improve to .500 in the league and 5-3 overall. A top-20 win against Villanova would propel Hampton into the playoff conversation with four games remaining on its docket, including another home date against a ranked opponent (Richmond on Nov. 16)."
