Grand Valley State is the two-time defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Lakers are dangerously close to seeing their run come to an end.

GVSU recently lost to Ferris State in their annual Anchor-Bone Classic, which has been the game that ultimately decided the conference champion in recent years.

Entering this week, Ferris State tops the GLIAC standings at 5-0, while GVSU and Saginaw Valley State are 4-1. Davenport and Michigan Tech are a game back at 3-2.

With two weeks of conference games remaining, a lot still can happen – on paper, at least – but one thing for sure is that this Week 11 matchup between Grand Valley State and Michigan Tech is a must-win for both teams. 

They’ll face each other Saturday at Kearly Stadium in Houghton, Michigan. Kickoff is set for noon Eastern, live on FloFootball.

This year marks the 31st meeting between the two schools, with GVSU holding an 27-3 advantage in the series, including the last eight contests. The Lakers won the 2023 battle at home by a score of 44-13.

Coming into the 2024 tilt, Grand Valley State is 8-1 overall and 4-1 in GLIAC action. 

The Lakers are coming off a 51-28 victory over winless Wayne State and moved up to the No. 5 spot (from No. 7) in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll. They’re also second, behind Ferris State, in the latest Super Region 3 rankings, which is what will be used to determine this year’s 28 playoff teams. 

Michigan Tech already has more wins than it did each of the last two seasons, and they’re on a two-game winning streak that includes conference victories over Northern Michigan and Roosevelt.
