Richmond Defeats Campbell 27-24 With Last-Second Field Goal
Richmond didn't lead against Campbell on Saturday until a last-second field goal pushed the Spiders ahead 27-24, and that's where the game ended.
With five seconds remaining in Saturday’s game between Richmond and Campbell, there was potential disarray ahead for the Coastal Athletic Association Football standings, but Richmond kicker Brandon Peskin put an end to the whispers and speculation with a 36-yard game-winning field goal.
The Spiders never led in the game, but the redshirt senior delivered when his team needed it most, and the 27-24 victory over the Camels helped Richmond into sole possession of first place in the CAA with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Sophomore quarterback Camden Coleman authored the 11-play, 45-yard drive that put the Spiders ahead for the first time Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium in Buies Creek, North Carolina, and all his team had to do was stop the Camels on the ensuing kickoff to seal the victory.
Richmond improves to 8-2 overall and 6-0 in CAA play and now stands alone atop the standings. The Spiders entered the day tied with Rhode Island, which fell to Delaware, 24-21.
A loss by Richmond would’ve meant a five-way tie for the top spot with Rhode Island, Delaware, Stony Brook and Villanova, all of which are 5-1 in conference play.
Campbell (3-7, 1-5) scored first in its attempt to play spoiler and pick up a second win this year against a top-20 team, and the Camels led 17-7 at halftime.
Unfortunately, Campbell was quiet in the second half and saw Richmond put up 10 points in each of the final two quarters.
The game had a little bit of everything, though – three interceptions (two for Campbell, one for Richmond), a forced fumble and recovery for Campbell and a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown by freshman Randall King, making him the first Campbell player since 2018 to run one back.
Peskin was 2 of 3 on the day, hitting two field goals from 36 yards, after missing his first attempt from 46.
Across the final stats, Campbell had more total yards than Richmond, 401-399. The Camels had 273 on the ground and 128 through the air, while the Spiders threw for 252 and ran for 147.
Coleman was 19 of 33 for all of Richmond’s passing yards, with two touchdowns and the interception. He also led the Spiders with 55 rushing yards, just ahead of Zach Palmer-Smith (53), who entered the game as the conference’s No. 2 rusher.
Palmer-Smith was quiet in the win, but he did log his 11th touchdown of the season, a 1-yard run in the third quarter.
For Campbell, redshirt senior quarterback Mike Chandler II started under center for the second consecutive week, the only two starts of his career, and he completed 12 of 24 passes, with one touchdown and the two interceptions.
The touchdown pass, a 14-yard strike in the final quarter, went to redshirt senior wide receiver Sincere Brown, giving him the program’s single-season record for receiving touchdowns with 11.
Chandler entered the game as the Camels’ leading rusher and again got the job done on the ground, rolling up a game-high 121 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
The three-hour trip down Interstate 95 was bittersweet for the Spiders, who are playing their final season as a football-only member of the CAA. They’re headed to the Patriot League as an associate member following the 2024 season.
Delaware is departing, as well, but heading to Conference USA to play at the FBS level next season.
Up next for Richmond is a trip to Hampton on Nov. 16, following by a visit from William & Mary to wrap up the regular season.
The Spiders, who were ranked ninth in this week’s American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll, are looking to win at least a share of the CAA title for the second consecutive year, after sharing the crown last year with Villanova and UAlbany.
Campbell, playing under first-year under Braxton Harris, will head to Delaware next week, then finish the season at home against Towson.

What To Watch For In The CAA During Week 11 Of The 2024 Season
Things are tight in the CAA standings, and Week 11 features several key matchups. See what the experts have to say as the season winds down.
About Richmond Football
Richmond has scored at least 20 points in each of its last seven games, turning an 0-2 start into what could be a successful title defense in the CAA, along with an opportunity to keep the momentum going in the postseason.
The Spiders saw their 2023 season cut short by conference foe UAlbany in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.
On the way to a 7-2 mark this year, Richmond has been pretty average statistically, but the Spiders continue to find ways to win.
Through nine games, they’re second in the CAA in rushing offense (201.3 yards per game), fifth in points per game (28.8), fifth in total offense (396.9 yards per game) and 11th in passing (195.6 yards per game).
The Spiders are much better defensively, so they’ve been able to keep their opponents at bay. They’re giving up a second-best 18.3 points per game, rank second in rushing yards allowed per game (110.9) and fourth in total offense (331.3). They lead the CAA with 29 sacks this season.
Where Richmond has struggled the most is in defending the pass, as the Spiders rank 11th in the conference at 220.4 yards per game. This fact is good news for Campbell, which has the fourth-most passing yards per game in the CAA this year with 244.3.
Would it be too obvious to expect the Camels to keep things in the air Saturday?
Individually, Richmond junior Zach Palmer-Smith is the No. 2 rusher in the conference, ranking second in attempts (169), yards (927) and yards per game (103). He’s third in touchdowns with nine.

About Campbell Football
Campbell is a middle-of-the-pack team in the CAA in most statistical categories this season, but the Camels’ passing game is fourth in the conference at 244.3 yards per game.
The majority of the team’s passes have been thrown by redshirt sophomore Chad Mascoe Jr., who is 120 for 177 for 1,611 yards and 12 touchdowns. But he also has thrown five interceptions this year. Mascoe ranks sixth in the CAA in passing yards per game with 201.4.
However, Mascoe did not play last week against Elon. The start went to redshirt senior Mike Chandler II, who completed 22 of 39 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a team-high 51 yards. Chandler leads the team in rushing yards this season with 382 on 54 attempts.
Defensively, redshirt senior linebacker Jalen Brooks leads the Camels this year with 85 total tackles, which ranks second in the CAA, just one behind UAlbany’s Dontae Lunan.
