A last-second field goal against Campbell helped Richmond to a win and sole possession of first place in the Coastal Athletic Association Football standings, but the Spiders don’t have time to enjoy the moment.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the CAA title is Richmond’s to lose, but if the Spiders falter against Hampton or William & Mary, there’s a logjam of teams waiting for a chance to get their hands on the trophy.

While Hampton isn’t one of the contenders, the Pirates can play spoiler when they host Richmond on Saturday at Armstrong Stadium in Hampton, Virginia. Kickoff is set for noon Eastern.

The 27-24 win over the Camels helped Richmond (8-2, 6-0) climb two spots in the American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches Poll to No. 7, one place ahead of conference foe Villanova.

The Spiders have won eight consecutive games since opening the 2024 campaign with back-to-back losses.

With two weeks to play, Villanova, Delaware, Rhode Island and Stony Brook all are 5-1 in conference play, and none of them will play each other this week. 

The CAA crown was shared in 2023 by Villanova, UAlbany and Richmond after they all finished the conference slate at 7-1.

Hampton enters this week’s matchup with Richmond at 5-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play, coming off a 27-10 loss to Towson last week.  

The Pirates are fighting for their first winning season since 2018. They’ll finish the year on the road next week against UAlbany.

The 2024 Division I FCS College Football Championship game will be played on Jan. 6, 2025, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
