After fumbling on the first play of the game, the Angelo State University offense redeemed itself, and the Rams cruised to a 56-19 win over West Texas A&M to close out the 2024 regular season.

WTAMU did turn the early mishap into the game’s first points, but a dominant performance from junior quarterback Braeden Fuller kept ASU in control, while potentially helping the Rams secure the home-field advantage for the opening round of the Division II Playoffs next week.

The balanced attack from Fuller, who was last week’s Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, included a 13-for-23 passing effort for 238 yards and four touchdowns, along with 15 rushing attempts for 187 yards and three more scores.

The only Angelo State touchdown Fuller did not have a part in was a 45-yard interception return by redshirt junior cornerback Andrew Pitts in the third quarter. The pick was the 22nd of his career, extending his record for the most interceptions in program history.

The Rams finished the contest with 573 total yards (322 rushing, 251 passing) and closed their regular season with a 9-2 overall record. After opening the year with back-to-back losses, Angelo State rattled off nine consecutive wins, all in conference play.

ASU locked up the Lone Star Conference title last week with a win against Western Oregon, and the Rams ended their night against West Texas A&M by getting to hoist the trophy for the second time in three years.

The playoff picture for Angelo State will become clearer during the 2024 NCAA Division II Football Playoff Selection Show, which will air on NCAA.com on Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

That’s when 28 teams will be selected for this year’s playoff bracket, with the No. 1 team in each of the four super regions earning a first-round bye. The day will begin with 40 teams – 10 in each region – up for postseason consideration.

In the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll, Angelo State was ranked No. 21.

In the newest Division II regional rankings, ASU was fourth among the 10 teams up for consideration in Super Region Four.

2024 Season Ends For West Texas A&M

With the loss, West Texas A&M drops to 5-6 overall and 5-4 in conference play. Since the Buffaloes won’t be heading to the playoffs, their season comes to an end, marking a third consecutive losing campaign.

The game was the final collegiate action for 33 team members. In their final home game last week, the Buffaloes defeated Midwestern State 17-12.

On Saturday, the Buffs compiled 225 total yards against Angelo State (119 passing, 106 rushing), but they were held scoreless in the second half.

The fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage for Angelo State gave West Texas A&M a short field and a quick score, a 3-yard scramble by sophomore quarterback Kanon Gibson.

Gibson added a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter, including the final score of the first half, to cut the halftime deficit to 35-19.

Gibson finished the game 9 of 20 for 119 yards, the two touchdowns and the interception.

Senior running back Tre’Jon Henderson and junior RB Jamaal Joseph led the Buffaloes on the ground with 42 yards each, while senior wide receiver Tucker Swoboda was the leading receiver with four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.

The meeting between WTAMU and ASU in San Angelo on Saturday was the 38th contest between the two teams, with Angelo State now holding a 22-16 advantage in the series, including the three most recent showdowns. The Rams won the 2023 matchup in Canyon, Texas, 27-10.

About West Texas A&M Football

West Texas A&M Got The Job Done On Senior Night At Home

About Angelo State Football

Angelo State did not make the Division II Playoffs last season, so getting back into the 28-team bracket is a logical first goal that’s close to a done deal.

The Rams got back on top of the Lone Star Conference this year and look solid in the latest Division II regional rankings with a week to go.

When Angelo State won the LSC in 2022, the Rams earned a first-round bye for the playoffs then went 1-1, seeing their season come to an end in the quarterfinals at the hands of eventual national runner-up, Colorado School of Mines (42-24).

Statistically, Angelo State hasn’t done anything eye-popping within the LSC this year, but the Rams’ third-best 29.6 points per game has been enough to roll through the conference untouched. After losing two nonconference games to kick off the 2024 campaign, ASU has made light work of the LSC contests.

The Angelo State rushing attack is sixth among the conference’s 10 teams, with junior quarterback Braeden Fuller leading the team with 461 net yards and seven touchdowns.

Through the air, Fuller has completed 136 of 232 passes for 1,942 yards and 14 more scores. He leads the conference in total passing yards, is No. 2 with 194.2 yards per game and a 148.8 efficiency and has the second-most TD passes, just one behind the leader. He’s also the only Division II quarterback (with more than 200 passing attempts) without an interception this season.

The Angelo State defense has been stout, too, ranking No. 1 in the LSC in points given up per game (11.4).
