Valdosta State is one of two undefeated teams remaining in the 2024 NCAA Division II Football Championship – along with Kutztown – and the Blazers’ meteoric rise from an abysmal 2022 season hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down.

VSU rebounded from a shocking 5-6 season that came after an appearance in the 2021 national title game, to go 12-2 last season, which included being bounced from the quarterfinals of the Division II Playoffs.

Now, after a week off as the No. 1 team in this year’s Super Region Two, the Blazers are ready to get back on the field for a second-round meeting with Miles College

Valdosta State will welcome the Golden Bears to Cleveland Field at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Georgia, for the second meeting in history between the two programs. Kickoff is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.

The Valdosta State football program has been in action since 1982, collecting 20 appearances in the Division II Playoffs, 11 Gulf South Conference titles and four national championships (2004, 2007, 2012, 2018).

It’s also important to note that 2022 was a rebuilding year under new head coach Tremaine Jackson, who brought in a new team mentality. Though it took a minute, it looks like Jackson’s squad has gotten its footing.

The Blazers ended their 2024 regular season with a GSC title-clinching win over West Florida (28-7). They were the No. 1 team in the last American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll, and their undefeated run through the season (10-0) earned them a top regional ranking, too.

Valdosta State is 31-15 all-time in the Division II Playoffs and has reached the championship game six times, winning four.

In the 2023 playoff bracket under Jackson’s leadership, the Blazers defeated Limestone 62-41 and Delta State 38-31, before falling to Lenoir-Rhyne, 35-7.

This season, VSU has outscored its opponents 43.10-9.10, while averaging 461.7 yards per game, which is 11th nationally.

Miles College is having a record year of its own and is appearing in the Division II Playoffs for the third time in school history.

The Golden Bears made their first postseason appearance in 2012, then returned in 2019 after winning their first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship.

This year, they’ve won another SIAC title, earned their first Division II playoff win (a 14-13 victory last week over Carson-Newman) and set a single-season record for wins with 10 – and room to grow. The Golden Bears will head to Valdosta at 10-2 overall and riding a 10-game winning streak. They opened the season with back-to-back losses.

The first meeting between Valdosta State and Miles came in September 2022, with VSU cruising to a 55-7 victory.

The winner of the Miles College-Valdosta State showdown Saturday will advance to next week’s quarterfinals and meet the winner of the Virginia Union-Lenoir-Rhyne game.
