10 players to watch during the WCAC Playoffs.
The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference is loaded with talent on the rosters of its final four teams. From DeMatha’s DeMarcco Hellams to Gonzaga’s freshman phenom, here are 10 players to keep your eye on this weekend.
Watch Gonzaga (D.C.) vs. Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD) LIVE on FloFootball on Friday at 6 PM (EST)!
Watch DeMatha (MD) vs. St. John's (D.C.) LIVE on FloFootball on Saturday at 1 PM (EST)!
Austin Fontaine, DT, DeMatha
6-foot-3, 309 pounds
4-star, No. 9 DT — Committed to Maryland
Fontaine is a load in the middle of the DeMatha defensive line, but he’s not just plugging up the run game with a big body. The 309-pounder has elite athleticism for his size, making him a dangerous pass rusher and remarkably effective in backside pursuit.
Joseph Weté, DE, Gonzaga
6-3, 210 pounds
4-star, No. 1 overall in Washington DC -- Offers include: Southern Cal, Penn State, and Michigan
Joseph Weté's ceiling is the roof, so to speak. Gonzaga's star pass rusher is still growing into his impressive frame and he's already a nearly unblockable force off the edge. Good Counsel would do well to avoid obvious passing downs with No. 5 ready to pin his ears back and blow by a tackle.
Keilan Robinson, RB, St. John's
5-9, 175 pounds
3-star, No. 29 RB — Offers include: Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Michigan State
Robinson may be flying under the radar with some recruiting services, but he's not going unnoticed by Big Ten programs. Of his five offers, four have been extended by members of the Big Ten, with the ACC's North Carolina playing the odd school out, so to speak. Robinson is relatively diminutive, but he runs with an aggressiveness that far exceeds his playing weight.
Kam Snell, QB, Good Counsel
5-11, 175 pounds
Snell may be void of a prospect profile as his junior year winds down, but he has the juice to make an impact at the next level. It’s less a matter of if, and more an issue of when. Snell has been the single biggest reason for second-seeded Good Counsel’s surprise season.
Kevin Doyle, QB, St. John's
6-4, 210 pounds
3-star, No. 21 Pro-style QB — Committed to Michigan
Kevin Doyle is a big kid with prototypical size for a pocket-passing quarterback — but don't mistake that for being a micro-aggressive way of saying he can't move. Doyle is quicker than most quarterbacks with similar stature, with athleticism that consistently shows up on tape. Oh, and he also has a huge arm.
Caleb Williams, QB, Gonzaga
6-0, 190 pounds
Caleb Williams is a freshman. Let that sink in before you watch him lead the Gonzaga offense on Friday night. The kid has displayed poise and confidence — not to mention arm talent and pocket presence — well beyond his years. He’s a name to know now and in the future.
DJ Brown, CB, St. John's
6-1, 178 pounds
3-star, No. 8 overall in DC — Committed to Virginia
Brown has flashed a distinct playmaking ability that makes the Virginia pledge one of the most dangerous cornerbacks in the country. Brown has the length and leaping ability to hang with big bodies, coupled with the speed and quickness to run with just about anyone.
John Morgan, DE, DeMatha
6-2, 236 pounds
3-star, No. 36 WDE — Committed to Pittsburgh
Morgan is more athlete than defensive end — and that’s meant as a compliment. Sure, he can put his hand in the ground, set the edge, and rush the passer. But Morgan has the athleticism to live up to his linebacker build — which may provide a glimpse into his future at Pitt.
Cam Goode, DT, St. John's
5-11, 315 pounds
3-star, No. 6 overall in DC — Committed to Virginia Tech
Goode creates a unique challenge for opposing blockers as a result of his 5-11 frame. Goode's naturally low pad level is tough for taller offensive linemen to combat — particularly when defending the run. He’s a noise-maker and he won’t go quietly in the postseason.
DeMarcco Hellams, WR/S, DeMatha
6-2, 215 pounds
4-star, No. 2 overall in Maryland in ’19 class — Offers include: Clemson, Michigan, and Penn State.
Hellams will likely be the best player on the field in most of the games left in the junior’s high school career — and these playoffs will be no exception. Hellams is an elite athlete with exceptional ball skills who isn’t afraid to bring the hat on defense.
Mekhail Sherman, LB, St. John’s
6-3, 234 pounds
Offers include: Penn State, North Carolina, and Maryland.
Just a sophomore, Mekhail Sherman looks like a prospect who could help a Power Five program next fall — let alone three years from now. Sherman has the strength to handle his business in the box, fused with the speed and agility to run with wide receivers in pass coverage. He’ll be all over the place.
