Thanksgiving Day Football Guide — With A Side Of Madden & Summerall
The best of John Madden and Pat Summerall on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving means food, football, and uncomfortable small talk with your relatives. And there were no better hosts for that party than the legendary NFL announcing duo of John Madden and Pat Summerall.
Uncle Pat, the voice of reason, was there to explain things away for 60 minutes, without ever delving into exaggeration and hyperbole. He was good that way. On his own, though, Uncle Pat's act may have grown a bit stale were it not for Uncle John.
Uncle John was a well-meaning loose cannon, screaming "boom" in your face and drawing pictures on all of your family portraits in an effort to break down the lineage of each obscure cousin. He'd have been a bit much if he wasn't so damn lovable.
In honor of John and Pat, here's the best of Madden and Summerall on Thanksgiving, courtesy of Fox Sports:
Amazing. Nostalgic. Kind of makes you want to pop in Madden '98 on the old Sega or something, no?
Anywho, here's what's being served up on the gridiron this year:
Minnesota Vikings at Detroit Lions
12:30 PM (EST) | FOX
Normally, Detroit's Thanksgiving game is something of an afterthought compared to whatever circus is being held at Cowboys Stadium, but this game between the Vikings (8-2) and the Lions (6-4) is really good. Minnesota has looked like a Super Bowl team more times than not this year.
Los Angeles Chargers at Dallas Cowboys
4:30 PM (CST) | CBS
The Cowboys are 30-18-1 on Thanksgiving Day, but the 31st win won't come easy on Turkey Day this year. Philip Rivers and the Chargers (4-6) are a sneaky contender in the AFC. The 'Boys (5-5) look lost on offense without Zeke Elliott and Tyron Smith, and the defense hasn't stopped anyone but the Giants all year.
Ole Miss at Mississippi State — The Egg Bowl
7:30 PM (CST) | ESPN
Mississippi State (8-3) was ranked as the top three-loss team in the country — a hat tip from the committee to the No. 14 Bulldogs' trio losses to top six teams (No. 1 Alabama, No. 6 Auburn, No. 7 Georgia) — and is jockeying for improved bowl position in its last game of the regular season. Ole Miss (5-6) isn't playing for anything other than the satisfaction of ruining its rival's day.
New York Giants at Washington Redskins
8:30 PM (CST) | NBC
This game obviously looked like a great matchup for Thanksgiving night when schedule setters were doing their thing. Instead, the 2-8 Giants' prime-time visit to the Redskins (4-6) will likely serve as nothing more than background noise for your second (or third) round of turkey and dressing. But don't cry for NBC. The game is preceded by the Macy's Parade and the National Dog Show, making it the third-best thing to appear on the network on Thursday.
