TCU’s Taj Williams Leads American Team To Tropical Bowl Win
Taj Williams led the American Team to a Tropical Bowl victory in Daytona Beach.
TCU wide receiver Taj Williams made two spectacular grabs and otherwise stood out on a day full of standout performances.
Before Williams got rolling, it was Arizona running back Zach Green who made a massive impact early, rushing for the games first two scores.
The National Team answered near the end of the first quarter when North Carolina quarterback Brandon Harris found West Georgia wide receiver DeNiko Carter with a jump ball on fourth down and 1.
On the ensuing possession, Indiana standout Richard Lagow hooked up with Williams from 17 yards out on what was arguably the play of the day.
Two possessions later, Catawba’s Patrick O’Brien marched the National Team down the field and into a goal-to-go situation. But, on fourth down, Washington State’s Marcellus Pippins was up for the challenge.
The answer for the National Team came out of the halftime break, when Lincoln’s Rameses Owens powered in for the score to cut the American advantage to 19-13.
Unfortunately for the boys in blue, Montell Cozart was playing the role of closer for the American Team on this day. Cozart entered at the beginning of the fourth quarter and promptly led the offense on a 91-yard touchdown drive — the highlight of which was a 37-yard completion to Williams.
Though it came in a losing effort, LSU quarterback Danny Etling eventually navigated the offense into the end zone, as well — hooking up with Jared Beard on the game’s final play.
Among the awards handed out during the postgame festivities, Williams and Harris took home Offensive Most Valuable Player awards for their respective teams.
