UNH Punter Sean Lehane, Stony Brook QB Charlie McKee Earn National Honors
CAA standouts garnered national recognition for their performances in Week 8.
New Hampshire sophomore punter Sean Lehane was chosen as the FedEx Ground FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week and Stony Brook freshman quarterback Charlie McKee was selected as the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman of the Week by Stats Perform.
Lehane averaged 44.8 yards on five punts and dropped four of them inside the 10-yard line to help New Hampshire get past Elon, 40-22. The sophomore’s first four punts pinned the Phoenix at the 1-yard line, 4-yard line, 1-yard line and 7-yard line. He also had two punts over 50 yards, including a 56-yarder. Lehane is averaging 41.1 yards per punt for the season.
McKee completed 18-of-21 passes for a career-high 249 yards and three touchdowns as Stony Brook rallied past Maine, 28-27, for its first victory. Trailing 20-7 at the half, the freshman threw a pair of scoring passes (10 and 1 yards) in the third quarter before hitting Khalil Newton on a 7-yard TD toss that gave the Seawolves the lead with 5:48 remaining.
CAA Football player has now had six players recognized as a FedEx Ground National Players of the Week by Stats Perform. Delaware linebacker Johnny Buchanan was named National Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5 following his school-record 23-tackle performance in the Blue Hens’ victory over Navy. William & Mary cornerback Jalen Jones received National Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Sept. 12 after intercepting three passes in the Tribe’s win over Campbell. Delaware quarterback Nolan Henderson was chosen as the National Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after passing for a career-high 379 yards and four touchdowns in the Blue Hens’ 42-21 triumph over Rhode Island. UAlbany quarterback Reese Poffenbarger earned National Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 17 after throwing for 337 yards and four touchdowns against Hampton.
Along with the awards for Lehane and McKee, Stats Perform recognized Rhode Island running back Marques DeShields as a National Offensive Player of the Week honorable mention selection, William & Mary safety Tye Freeland as a National Defensive Player of the Week honorable mention selection, and UAlbany quarterback Reese Poffenbarger as a National Freshman Player of the Week honorable mention selection.
