The William & Mary football team is ready to defend its share of the CAA football title in 2023, but the schedule won’t make it easy. 

W&M went 7-1 in CAA play in 2022, sharing the conference title with New Hampshire before reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Playoffs, where the season ended in Bozeman, Montana against Montana State.

The Tribe went 11-2 in 2022, beating No. 11-ranked Richmond 37-26 on the road. After beating Gardner-Webb in the first round, William & Mary advanced in the playoffs.

Eleven CAA Football Players Recognized On AP FCS All-America Football Team

The Tribe finished No. 8 in the FCS Coaches Poll, the highest-ranked CAA team in the final poll. 

The lone CAA loss William & Mary suffered in 2022 was to Elon, who upset the Tribe 35-31 in Williamsburg.  

William And Mary Coach Mike London To Face Familiar Programs 

This season’s schedule for William & Mary includes a new mix of CAA opponents, including Albany and Maine. With 15 teams, the CAA cycles different opponents each year, which is why William & Mary didn't face New Hampshire in 2022 and will avoid the New England powerhouse this year. Last year, William & Mary faced Villanova, Stony Brook, Rhode Island, and Delaware, along with its normal mix of Towson, Richmond, Hampton, and Elon. 

The Tribe will also face two of coach Mike London’s former programs – rival Richmond in the Capital Cup, but also Virginia. 

London rose to prominence at Richmond, his alma mater, and won the FCS Championship in 2008 in his first year. He was hired by Virginia in 2010 and went 27-46 from 2010-2015 with the ACC program. 

Since taking over William & Mary in 2019, London has gone from 5-7 in his first year to 11-2 in 2022.
