This season, the Bryant Bulldogs will make their debut in the Coastal Athletic Association, bringing the number of teams in the league to an unprecedented 16, also the most of any FCS conference.
The Bulldogs have been conference hopping in recent seasons, but for good reason – a commitment to growth and becoming an FCS contender.
Bryant is coming off a 6-5 campaign in 2023 that included a 4-2 mark in Big South-OVC Football Association. The season ended with wins over Lindenwood (38-3) and Southeast Missouri State (45-21).
Bryant is coached by Chris Merritt, who is entering his sixth season as the head coach of the Bulldogs. He is the fourth head coach in program history and owns a 23-26 record.

The Bryant program began in 1999 and competed in Division II (Northeast-10 Conference), making playoff appearances in 2006 and 2007, losing both times.
As the school grew from Bryant College to Bryant University, so too did its football ambitions. The 2008 season marked the team’s move to Division I and first opportunity to offer scholarships, along with a move to the Northeast Conference, where the Bulldogs remained through 2021.
The transition to FCS play meant a move to the Big South Conference for the 2022 season and ultimately the Big South-OVC Football Association, which was the result of a merger between the Big South and the Ohio Valley Conference. The move was to help create a more competitive league schedule and allow the conference to offer an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs.
The announcement of Bryant’s move to the CAA came in August 2023, as the school again was looking to elevate its level of play.
