It’s the final opportunity for the Delaware Blue Hens to leave their mark on the Coastal Athletic Association, as they’ll be moving on to Conference USA and the FBS ranks next season.

Because of the impending departure, the Blue Hens won’t be eligible for the FCS playoffs this season, meaning their postseason appearance last year – also 20 years from their 2003 national championship – was their last chance for glory at the FCS (previously Division I-AA) level.

In 2023, the Blue Hens were 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the CAA. That was enough to earn them an at-large spot in the Division I FCS bracket, where they defeated Lafayette College 36-34 then fell to Montana 49-19.

The 2022-2023 season was the second for head coach Ryan Carty and a new era offensively, following the departure of standout quarterback Nolan Henderson. Ryan O’Connor stepped in for the majority of the snaps, throwing for 2,104 yards and 19 touchdowns, while running back Marcus Yarns had a breakout season.

Yarns, now a graduate student, led Delaware with 939 rushing yards. He was fourth in the nation with 6.9 yards per carry, second in the country with 18 total touchdowns and fourth with 15 rushing touchdowns. He had four 100-yard games and scored in nine of the team’s 13 contests.

Yarns was selected to the 2023 CAA Football Second-Team Offense and has garnered multiple preseason honors heading into the new campaign.

Carty, who was a member of the national championship team in 2003, is back for another go and will be looking to build on his 17-9 record as the Delaware head coach.
