Complete Performance Helps Richmond To 38-0 Win Over Charleston Southern

The Richmond Spiders have picked up the first win of their 2024 campaign, downing Charleston Southern 38-0 on Family Weekend at Robins Stadium.

Richmond celebrated Family Weekend at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia, with a much-needed win over Charleston Southern on Saturday, and the Spiders did it with a dominating performance on both sides of the ball.

Richmond rolled up 370 yards in the 38-0 victory, including the first passing touchdown for the Spiders in 2024, and the defense contributed three sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, all while holding the Buccaneers to 131 yards of total offense.

The Spiders entered the week at 0-2, marking the first time since 1990 they've lost their first two games in consecutive seasons, but just like last year, Week 3 featured the first step toward turning around the season.

The meeting with Charleston Southern (1-2) was the first in history between the two teams.

Redshirt junior quarterback handled business for the Spiders before leaving the game in the final quarter due to an ankle injury. He was 10 for 12 for 128 yards and the team's first touchdown through the air, a 39-yard strike to redshirt senior receiver Nick DeGennaro.

DeGennaro had five catches on the day for 71 of the Spiders' 157 passing yards.

The Richmond ground attack included three players with 10 or more rushes, led by junior running back Zach Palmer-Smith, who had 21 attempts for 80 yards and two touchdowns. The Spiders had 213 rushing yards in the win.

Defensively, redshirt senior defensive back Jabril Hayes and redshirt sophomore DB D'Angelo Stocker had first-half interceptions of backup Charleston Southern quarterback Zolten Osborne, with Hayes running his back 76 yards for the defensive score.

Osborne, a sophomore, entered the game in the second quarter after starter Rob McCoy Jr. left the game with an injury. Osborne finished the day 10 for 19 for 81 yards, plus the two interceptions.

The fumble was forced and recovered by Richmond redshirt sophomore linebacker Carter Glassmyer.

In all, Charleston Southern managed just 92 yards through the air and 39 yards on the ground and was not able to maintain the momentum of a feel-good win over ranked Furman last week.

Up next for Charleston Southern is a week off and an opportunity to reevaluate things before kicking off a run of eight consecutive conference games (Big South-Ohio Valley Conference) Sept. 28 on the road at Tennessee State.

Richmond heads to Delaware State next Saturday for one final tune-up before finishing the season with eight straight Coastal Athletic Association Football contests.

Last year, the Spiders rebounded from their 0-2 start and earned a share of the CAA title, going 7-1 in conference play and 9-4 overall, which included advancing to the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs.

Unfortunately, that momentum didn't carry into the 2024 season.

Richmond opened this season with a 34-13 road loss to Virginia and a 26-19 home loss to Wofford.

Charleston Southern was 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the new Big South-OVC last season, finishing in a four-way tie one place above the cellar in the conference standings. Garnder-Webb and UT Martin shared the inaugural conference title.

The 2024 campaign was going much better for the Bucs, who opened with a 22-21 loss to The Citadel and bounced back for a 24-20 win on the road against Furman, a top-20 team at the time.

About Charleston Southern Football

A young Buccaneers team is coming off a noteworthy 24-20 victory against #15/16 Furman, the first win for Charleston Southern over a ranked FCS team since 2016, which included four forced turnovers.

The Big South-OVC took notice of Charleston Southern’s performance and rewarded two Buccaneers with awards. Redshirt junior linebacker Tylan Hollis was named Big South-OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, and junior punter Gilbert Brown was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Hollis’ efforts included a sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery and an interception. Brown had seven punts with an average of 47 yards and turned an extra-point attempt into a two-point conversion.

Graduate quarterback Rob McCoy Jr. was 12 for 23 on the day for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomore receiver Noah Jennings had seven catches for 97 yards, which include TD catches of 27 and 31 yards.

Second-year head coach Gabe Giardina was proud of the milestone win, but he made sure the attention quickly turned to Richmond.

He did say his young team is growing as a group and showing confidence and selflessness, which he finds encouraging as the season rolls on.

In their season-opening game against The Citadel, the Buccaneers saw a 21-3 third-quarter lead disappear. The Bulldogs notched the only score of the final quarter, and the ensuing extra point gave them the eventual 22-21 victory on the road.

Though the teams had met five times previously, the rivalry game earned a new name in 2024 – the Lowcountry Boil Bowl – with the rewards for the winner being a sizable trophy and seafood feast. A Lowcountry boil is a huge one-pot meal that features shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn and more.

About Richmond Football

Of the nine teams clocking in for the Big South-OVC this season, Richmond has seen two of them in the past – Gardner Webb and Western Illinois. The Spiders are 1-1 against the first and 1-0 against the latter for a 2-1 overall mark.

As the Spiders look to maintain their advantage over one of the newer conferences in town, they’ll also be looking to move past a couple of other noteworthy stats – this is the first time since the 1989 and 1990 seasons Richmond has started 0-2 in consecutive years, and it’s the first time since those same years the Spiders have lost consecutive home openers.

Entering the season, the CAA coaches selected Richmond to finish second in the conference behind Villanova, a ranking the Spiders have earned with back-to-back 9-4 seasons. Therefore, it’s definitely too early to panic.

In 2024, redshirt junior quarterback Kyle Wickersham has resumed his starting role under center and has made the majority of the team’s passes. He’s 24 for 47 for 207 yards, but he has yet to throw a touchdown to go with three interceptions.

Sophomore Camden Coleman is 4 for 9 for another 32 yards but also is without a touchdown pass. He has one interception.

The Spiders have three rushing touchdowns on the year, all by different players, so kicker Brandon Peskin is the leading scorer with 12 points – three field goals and three extra points.

Richmond is led by Russ Huesman, who’s in his eighth season as the team’s head coach.
